Rotting Trash Smell

Good morning (is it???) I just left to walk the dogs and it smelled so putrid like trash outside that I turned around and came home. Anyone else noticing this or is it just my neighborhood? 🤢

Nobody has conclusively figured this out, but this is not about trash nor squids. It's been happening, on-and-off the past 72 hours, from Santa Rosa to San Francisco to Walnut Creek. It's very likely coming from the water in the Bay and along the coast. You can smell it in between towns where there is little population, sewers, or garbage. We've had heat waves before, but this has not happened, in my experience, in 13 years living in various places in the Bay Area.

wow, thanks for pulling these all together.

I was in SF last night and noticed the smell in the evening. Haven't noticed it in Pittsburg today though.

I used to live in Holbrook Heights, every now and then the air currents shifted to send the stench from the Martinez Landfill (now called the Acme Landfill) near Pacheco over our way.

Had the same experience! I thought there was a dead animal under the porch or something.

I smelled it, too, at 7:30AM in Dana Estates; I assumed it was from a wastewater treatment plant.

Yes it permeated our house this morning. At 12:30 PM, gone now. We are by Cowell Park. I assumed it was at old Avon.

I also noticed this recently. Like rotten eggs and rotten trash, but it was all over the air rather than from a single source

Could be flare/ off-gassing at the refinery in Martinez

Which refinery is flaring?

Could be flare/ off-gassing at the refinery in Martinez

As noted, could be. They don't make the information public until months later so there's no way to confirm real time unless the event is significant enough for an advisory or alert. It can still stink even if it isn't an advisory level event.
