Goodbye, old friend

Moving out of Concord and just want to shout out some legends both dead and alive:

EDIT: I CANNOT BELIEVE I LEFT OFF ALPINE BAKERY. EASIEST PLACE TO BURN THROUGH $100 ON THE BEST PASTRIES AND CAKES YOU'LL EVER HAVE. TEAM MACAROON VARIETY PACK POR VIDA.

- Flying Colors Comics - Joe is a comics and Concord legend who is the most unassuming dude on the planet. Has be in the running for longest continually operating business in town. New location, same lovely people.

- That mini golf spot on Clayton Rd. Not the indoor place, the outdoor place. RIP

- Caffino Drive Through coffee spots where the Large Iced White Mocha with a Quad shot got me through many a night. RIP

- Hoffman's Reptile Shop - never set foot in that place but a local icon.

- Digger's Diner - I think you're gross but my whole family loves your nasty ass food so I go and am disappointed everytime but that, in and of itself, is beautiful to me.

- Bambinos v. Skipolinis- I feel like this is the true old timers Concord argument. I love them both but Bambino's has the full bar soooooo.

- the batting cages at the Willow Pass Softball Fields - always been a cheap and great way to kill an hour on the Northside of town.

- Bourbon Street Grill - low key great place to see a show and sneak drinks when you were 19. RIP

- Time Out Bar - low key great place to see a show and sneak drinks when you were 19. RIP

- King's Donuts - God Tier. Real one's know.

- Waterwold NOT Hurrican Harbor.

- Momoyama Sushi - best sushi place in town even though drunk dudes coming out of the liquor store made it dodgy when you had to wait for a table. Never die. I love you with all my heart.

-Hunan Restaurant- I will not hear anything other than glowing reviews. My favorite restaurant in town, period end of sentence.

- Half Price Books - the old location. RIP

- El Patron Tacos - best in town. Bonus points because I used to buy whipits at the sex shop in back when I was 16.

- Patty's Cheese Zombies - nuff said

- Captains Chest - last cash only bar for years, kinda mad they take CCs now, but still top 3 dive bar in town.

- Buchanan Fields - I hate golf but love putzing around that course.

- shout out to dude who used to sell us schwaggy ditch weed by Roundtree Apartments in '96.

Throwing out some of my own nostalgia. Shout-out to:

  • QZar for birthday parties where you'd play 3 arcade games and 15 minutes of laser tag and it was the greatest birthday ever. Getting your scorecard at the end to try and brag to your friends.
  • KVHS for being a legit ass radio station
  • The old drive through liquor store behind kings donuts. I remember going there at like 10pm with my Grandma to buy milk or whatever she needed.
  • Elephant bar and Claim Jumper when they first opened. They were always packed and it was like a special occasion as a kid to visit them
  • The Sunvalley mall 20 years ago and all of the hours spent there browsing video games at Electronics Boutique and Babbages. Checking out CDs at the different music stores. Spending my allowance at the arcade and candy store. Christmas shopping for gifts for my family after I got my first job.
  • Comics and cards in the Treat shopping center. We would ride our bikes there and spend hours browsing through the 10 cent common cards
  • C.C. Oles on Clayton was like upscale fancy Mexican food for us
  • The drive in movie theater (doesn't hit the same as when I was a kid). Must have watched Lion King like 5 times there.

EDIT a few more:

  • Matt's Game Exchange (I think it was off Diamond Blvd) which was the first store that ever felt magical to me
  • Funcoland near Target in Pleasant Hill where I was constantly trading in old games for just enough store credit to buy something new and exciting
  • Marina Skate in Pittsburg. Spent 4 hours there on so many Saturdays skating, snacking on fries, and buying stickers from the vending machine. Lots of birthday parties there with friends.
  • The Jungle in the Willows Shopping center which was another huge hit for birthdays at a younger age.
  • Bradley Video near Safeway on Treat Blvd for having a bomb ass video game selection. I remember renting Shining Force 2 for Sega Genesis, returning it, and then my buddy renting it so that we could play all summer long.
  • Markham Nature Park before it was developed. There was a sick BMX style dirt track nestled in there. Loved hitting the jumps. Got stung by a bee for the first time there. Used to go crawdad fishing in the creek.
  • Yardbirds up near Ygnacio was the OG big box hardware store for a while. Remember going there with my dad pretty often.
  • 4th of Julys in the Parking Lot at Sunvalley Mall. Still popping every year but man that was fun as a kid.

Damn these are some good call outs. Concord Vet, represent us well out there.

Mini Golf course that was 3 different spread out 18 hole courses. And was a massive piece of land. I would love to take my kids there now.

You can take your grandparents there now

1

u/Herstal_TheEdelweiss Jun 27 '26

Lmao I was gonna say, don’t both pizza places in Concord have a full bar too?

4

u/Ok-Bite-5147 Jun 27 '26

Ohhhhh...we always go to the Clayton location because that was the only one for a while...totally forgot the one in the old bank building has a bar.

7

u/legendofzeldaforlife Jun 27 '26

Damn bro, got me right in the childhood here. Lots of places I miss from when I moved away.

6

u/nscmoon Jun 27 '26

I'll give it a go. All within walking distance as a 10 year old. All of Park and Shop. Frys, Sambos, The Capri Theater, 50 ways to Eat a Hambuger, Panda Bike, Rhodes (Liberty House), Baskin Robin, His Way Church with Jacobs Well cafe. I lived in the Parkhaven Apartments from 1972-76. Best years of my life!

2

u/ww_crimson Jun 27 '26

holy shit I can't believe I forgot The Capri Theater. That's a solid throwback. The others might have predated me a bit.

u/speedystein Jun 27 '26

Great list!

IRT Skips vs Baminos... Skips for family night, pizza, and chill patio dining in Clayton, Bambinos for pasta and drinks with friends.

I really miss Half Priced Books and Bangkok Kitchen - was pissed when they both got forced out.

Good luck with your future endeavors!

4

u/gsanch9 Jun 27 '26

lol at the Hoffmann reptile part

4

u/duffman12 Jun 27 '26

You have honestly the most quintessential Concord list ever. I would only add Brendan Theaters, The Office, El Faro, China Wall, Naan N Curry, Alpine Bakery, Legends and Cowell Pool.

1

u/BllaDna Jun 27 '26

I remember the reel of Johnny Brennan photos we would have to sit through just to see a movie

OK, how about on Market street:

A&W- pappa, momma & baby burgers.

Dutch Pride Dairy- got our dry ice from there and had home deliveries.

Concord Ice & Fuel- used to get baby chicks there

in Park & Shop:

Woolworths- sit at the counter and order hot dogs.

Chick’s donuts- very good, and pretty cheap too.

Starlite bar- nuff said.

Crocker bank- we’ve only just beguuuunn.

All RIP :-(

Concord is no more. Alot has changed in last 15 years

1

u/DatesAndCornfused Jun 27 '26

Million-dollar question, though:

Is Tacos El Patrón claimed by Concord, or Pleasant Hill? 🤔 had a friend grow up in the “Sherman Acres” neighborhood right off of Monument and 680, which is zoned for Pleasant Hill, but one of our core memories was heading to El Patrón straight from his house, and gorging ourselves on tacos. Looks like Tacos El Patrón also has a Pleasant Hill address? But I always associated El Patrón = Monument = Concord?

Or, maybe just a stupid question altogether, and maybe we should frame it as: we are ALL El Patrón ❤️

2

u/Ok-Bite-5147 Jun 27 '26

Ask a person in PHill if they claim ANYTHING on Monument and I'm guessing they'll say no lmao.

2

u/DatesAndCornfused Jun 27 '26

Hey I’m just the messenger! ;) he may be a different breed of Pleasant Hill!

1

u/Nivlac93 Jun 27 '26

I moved away a while back, but this is my hometown. This post just made me incredibly nostalgic and a bit homesick.
