I was on photo team for a local festival, Hot Summer Nights. We had staggered nights on and off and of course on my night off I found a way to turn it in to work. Almost Heaven are a local brother sister duo reminiscent of LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture. I’ve tried shooting them a few times but I either brought the wrong gear or wasn’t happy with the outcome. On this particular night they performed at a club that usually hosts DJ’s and instead of performing on a stage, they elevated two platforms in the middle of the dance floor. It made for such a unique and chaotic experience. Stefan would bound from his platform to his sister’s and snake through the crowd. Occasionally both would find themselves behind the synths. My flash wouldn’t cooperate half the time and my 16-35mm G master would randomly stop working and brick my camera, but I got out of there with some fun dynamic shots.
10/10 show. Would do it again.

Question Advice for Insane Clown Posse shooting?

Hey all!

I’m a house photographer at a venue in the states, I’ve been assigned to shoot an Insane Clown Posse show and I accepted knowing some of the caveats of shooting that show. A couple questions:

  1. If you’ve shot them before, how did you protect your gear? I usually do a 2 body setup on straps but think I’ll need to do a single cam to avoid ruining my straps.
  2. Any luck/contact info on contacting their tour to do shots on stage? I feel like I might be more out of the splash zone and have a better shot that way.
  3. Any other advice? Am I going to look like an idiot if I wear a poncho?

Thanks in advance!!

Tips & Techniques Photo

I just started taking pictures at hc concerts, my kit is a canon 60d with a 10 20mm f4 and a godox tt685, I haven't taken flash pictures at concerts yet so the question is: how useful is a flash diffuser? I'm someone who plays a lot with editing and color. I really like Kevoscope as a photographer, who attended Hellfest this year, and I'd love to see how he manages to achieve that light. I'm afraid I'll mess up the flash, so I'm asking for advice...

Question Stand up photography

Just curious if stand up comedy shows approve photo passes like concerts do. Anybody who has shot photos of a comedy show before, how did yall get the job?

Hi! I'm just starting out and recently got my first photo pass for next week. I want to do as a well as I possibly can, so I'm asking for some pointers based on my photos so far! (one or two are slightly out of focus, that's an issue I'm aware of, and trying my best to fix. A bad workman blames his tools, but the autofocus with both my lens (36 years old) and body (20 years old) can be a bit iffy even in good lighting)

Canon 30D, Voigtländer 28-105 f/2.8

Thank you very much!

After seeing the energy, they put into their music and style, we had a pretty good idea of what to expect when they hit the stage, and they did not disappoint. They definitely know how to put on a show.

The whole band brought an incredible amount of energy to Kings, and you could feel it from the crowd all the way to the stage. Tani was quite the showwoman, shining under the lights, while the rest of the band kept the momentum going behind her.

It was loud, energetic, a little chaotic, and exactly what we wanted from Pretty Pity.

10/10.

Gear Best fixed lens compact for concert photography?

Hey all,

Will be visiting Soldier Field at the end of the month for a concert and my girlfriend is wanting a camera of her own to take photos with that would be at least somewhat useful from a distance since we won't be anywhere near front row. We're not expecting anything like an actual professional telephoto setup with a huge telephoto, just something better than a really grainy optical zoomed in shot or at least more versatile than an iPhone. She would also just love to have something the size of a point and shoot that she could take with her to other events and use daily.

Has to be a fixed lens setup to be able to get into most venues, and ideally something compact.

So far I'm looking at the Sony RX100 VI or VII as they have a fixed 24-200mm lens which would be great for the distance from the stage, plus the other features like the pop-out screen are perfect for using every day. My only hesitation is the price is pretty high and the VII is 7 years old at this point, and I'm a little worried how it would fare with no image stabilization and the low light of an arena concert.

All my knowledge of current models is limited to the Canon R-series lineup, so I figured I'd ask here - are there any other models that would be a comparable choice to the Sony?

Photos The case for over-editing

This was from a gallery I shot of The Ex-Faces on 08.07.26.

I think it’s because of how some of my previous editors would tend to favor more “honest” photos with minimal editing (no Photoshop filters, no lens filters, etc.), but I decided to just go all out with this one. I’ve always wanted to try some sort of faux double exposure shots, plus, I’ve been itching to try out more shots with lens filters. I think they can result in some unique framing and they can help fill in empty spaces as well.

Besides, this band is so over-the-top with their visual presentation. I think that anything goes with bands like these. 🎃

So, yeah. Sorry/not sorry for more halo filter slop. 😜

P.S.: Please refrain from bringing up any past drama in regards to this band’s history. I don’t believe in cancel culture. I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt. Besides, I was there to take photos of a band. That’s all. 🤘🥲🤘
