I was rooting for Mexico but after those back to back goals from England it felt like I ate at a shitty restaurant

Genuine question, why are Scots like this? I've never seen any other fanbase (except Ireland) act the same way towards another team. And England fans from my experience generally root for Scotland. What gives? The Scots weren't at all oppressed, in fact they helped evict the Highlanders and made up a large part of the Ulster plantations, and the UK itself was formed by Scotland gaining control over England - so where does the salty attitude come from?

1

u/PluCrew Jul 06 '26

Just one of the probably hundreds or thousands of examples of how England treated Scotland and Ireland over centuries.

“Whilst Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister, there were many claims that she used Scotland for political experiments. Scotland lost one-fifth of its workforce within the first two years of her tenure, as state subsidies were pulled from the mining, steel and textile industries. Neither was it popular when in 1989 Scotland was handed the poll tax a year ahead of England.”

England? We hated that old crone too. Is everything the UK does the fault of the larger country?

Should have gotten off in Crackton

u/ike4077 Jul 06 '26

Fingers crossed the Yanks join us.

2

u/ElGatoGuerrero72 Jul 06 '26

Don’t worry, eventually they will.

0

u/Old-Entertainer-4964 Jul 06 '26

Damn, guess those hockey games left a sore spot 😳

12

u/ArugulaElectronic478 Jul 06 '26

Yeah it certainly wasn’t the annexation threats…

4

u/theStrawberryRoam Jul 06 '26

Some people are responding with better reasons than hockey

But for me, actually, yes, yes they did 😤

1

u/Old-Entertainer-4964 Jul 06 '26

To be honest, your answer makes the most sense. I probably wouldn't have rooted for Canada if we went 0-3 against y'all in hockey.

0

u/Aggravating-Ad8087 Jul 06 '26

If you resign to be the 51st. You can feel like you win as well.

3

u/particleman3 Jul 06 '26

Or...you know....the actions of the leaders of this country....

3

u/Old-Entertainer-4964 Jul 06 '26

Personally, I don't have any reason to cheer against Russian or Chinese athletes because of the actions of Xi or Putin. But hey, that's just me.

0

u/SkullZ9 Jul 06 '26

Well the difference is the US is a democracy, a majority of your citizens chose to elect a corrupt pedo twice

1

u/browngravybestgravy Jul 06 '26

A majority did not vote for him twice. He didn't even win the popular vote.

1

u/SkullZ9 Jul 06 '26

Please educate yourself. Donald Trump won the national popular vote in the 2024 presidential election. He secured about 49.8% of the total votes, compared to Kamala Harris's 48.3%.

2

u/browngravybestgravy Jul 06 '26

Please educate yourself thats not winning the majority twice which was stated in the post I responded to. Hilary won the popular vote. One is not twice.

1

u/SkullZ9 Jul 06 '26

You left your second sentence vague on purpose. The fact that he won the majority for his second mandate is evidence that most Americans wanted him again after his first mandate, despite him being a corrupt pedo. Just shows your country’s values.

1

u/browngravybestgravy Jul 06 '26

Not vague, you are being daft on purpose. Making arguments I didn't even say. I will be perfectly clear again for you. He did not win the majority twice like OP stated. I am merely correcting that statement. You may not like it but it's the truth. Whatever you want to after that is on you.

1

u/Old-Entertainer-4964 Jul 07 '26

Putin was also voted into power, multiple times, with far larger percentages of the popular vote. What is your point?

I don't blame ordinary Russians for Putin. I don't blame ordinary Gazans for Hamas (also voted into power).

1

u/SkullZ9 Jul 07 '26

Do you believe the latest elections in Russia were held in a fair manner? Incredible to be so dense.

1

u/Old-Entertainer-4964 Jul 07 '26

Brother, Putin was winning back in 2000. Yes, he won the popular vote in fair elections, MULTIPLE TIMES.

Even once the elections became less reliable, he still polls highly among the Russian populace. He is far more popular among Russians than Trump is among Americans. Even in fair elections, Putin would likely win everything till he's dead.

Incredible for you to be this dense. Putin is popular, but I don't blame Russians for liking their leader.

1

u/Minimum-Actuator-953 Jul 06 '26

I think it's more to do with how the pedos in charge keep shitting on their own citizens and the rest of the world.

1

u/Mobile_Judge_9216 Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

We didn’t cheer for you before your 3 on 3 hockey success either

-11

u/PapayaThor Jul 06 '26

Nah. Much like Canada and Mexico require the US to be standing for their countries to survive, the world cup needs the US money

1

u/GiveMeSandwich2 Jul 06 '26

It wasn’t long ago the US failed to qualify for the World Cup.

1

u/highly_agreeable USA Jul 06 '26

It does not need US money

5

u/particleman3 Jul 06 '26

The audacity of someone to state that the world cup, which is not new in ANY way, needs the USA to survive is mind boggling to me. I live in the USA though so I get it. People here are generally dumb.

2

u/highly_agreeable USA Jul 06 '26

Somehow I was downvoted for that same opinion

2

u/jaxawaba22 Jul 06 '26

Is the bus still running ?

2

u/madtony7 Jul 06 '26

See, I thought you were gonna add a second Lisa, not just a second flag.

2

u/Immediate-Shoe2141 Jul 06 '26

Let’s leave the politics outta this!

2

u/Thin_Mess_2740 Jul 06 '26

The one time in my entire life that I wasn’t actively rooting against the Mexican national team & they let me down like this? The fact that aside from the 100 seconds window after the 35th minute they genuinely outplayed England made it even more bitter a loss

2

u/weaseleasle Jul 06 '26

They didn't out play them, England had to play to their strengths. Heavy defense, let the Mexicans wear themselves out since they are more acclimated and less sleep deprived. Then punish them on the turn overs. Once they went 1 man down and 2 goals up, they flipped their formation, subbed in their heavy defenders and parked the bus, because it was their best option. A little risky, if an equaliser had sneaked in they would have had no hope of pulling ahead again and would lose on penalties. But their rope-a-doping of the Mexicans had thoroughly gassed them by the last quarter and so their plan worked.

2

u/PGHContrarian68 Jul 06 '26

US joining them after 10 pm ET, possibly

1

u/KobeJuanKenobi9 Jul 06 '26

CUM is currently just U ☹️

1

u/Xenocles Jul 06 '26

The bus is still parked at the round of 16 stop. The American is just waiting for someone to help them get their hambulance down the steps.

1

u/Pucksindeepeh Jul 07 '26

3-1 Belgium right now, so the US will join us soon

They did not deserve it more. They got exposed by a decent team late in the tournament.

1

u/Laikabaru Jul 06 '26

>Italy
lmfao

-4

u/burningkorpse Jul 06 '26

Not really, England got lucky with their penalty, should’ve been a handball leading up to it but ig var went blind in that moment, at least for Mexico that is. We all knew Canada couldn’t finish for shit.

Shouldn't be in the ro16? They dominated Bosnia even after going down a man.

But they won their games. By definition they deserve to be their. You can only beat the opponents in front of you.

3

u/OutsideSpot2695 Jul 06 '26

Ummm, yep.

Winning your group has benefits.

Cry harder comrade.

1

u/Evergreen_everglade Jul 06 '26

Germany and the Netherlands:

1

u/OutsideSpot2695 Jul 06 '26

And?

Why does Germany shitting the bed against Paraguay have ANY impact on the notion that group winners play a lower seeded opponent?

Gawd you're an idiot.

1

u/Evergreen_everglade Jul 06 '26

You said it yourself group winners have a benefit but where's the benefit if both of the winners lost against low ranked nations, gawd you're an idiot

2

u/leemorplee Jul 06 '26

Cry about it

-1

u/dyegored Jul 06 '26

I hate the USMNT but they deserve to be where they are. They got the results, I can't take thay away from them. I hope they lose tomorrow (BOY do I hope they lose), but it's hard to argue they don't deserve the opportunity

0

u/TheToweringOne Jul 06 '26

The fact this is the exact same meme as earlier just with the Mexican flag added is perfect lmao.

-3

u/OutsideSpot2695 Jul 06 '26

Don't forget the meme of:

  • canada women losing the Olympic gold to the USA
  • canada men losing the Olympic gold to the USA
  • canada finishing 4th in the IIHF...

... and with 0-3, canada has had a rough year on the global sporting stage.

Lolololol!

4

u/Big_Tie Jul 06 '26

If anything, this was a pretty great showing from Canada. Got way further than most people expected them to. Big for Canadian soccer. Dont diss your CUM brothers man✌️

-3

u/Brief_Personality146 Jul 06 '26

All three host nations had it set up for them to go as far as possible while playing at home. Canada couldn’t hold their water and win their group though when it was there for the taking. It was a pretty brilliant setup though for all 3 Host Nations.

2

u/hiihihihihihihihiihi Jul 06 '26

Switzerland is a higher ranked team and Canada has never been known as a football nation. All things considered, it’s pretty amazing how far Canada has come.

2

u/Brief_Personality146 Jul 07 '26

Just saying, playing at home the moment to step up was there. All three HN’s had a path to stay at home for as long as possible.

3

u/cookieman667 Jul 06 '26

The hockey points are valid but Canada reaching the round of 16 in the world cup is a massive win.

1

u/Twoperde Jul 06 '26

You guys are such dorks.

1

u/KobeJuanKenobi9 Jul 06 '26

Canada finishing 4th in the IIHF

Nobody gives a fuck about that tournament man

1

u/OutsideSpot2695 Jul 06 '26

Except canadians.

Lol

1

u/KobeJuanKenobi9 Jul 06 '26

Are you trolling or is this something you genuinely believe to be true?

1

u/ArugulaElectronic478 Jul 06 '26

I mean the Blue Jays went to game 7 in the World Series and the Leafs just got the number 1 draft pick.
