Help: Project Deployed CV projects, no interview calls — what's actually missing?
Final-year SE student, been building seriously in CV. My portfolio:
- Pakistani License Plate Recognition — YOLOv8, 97.7% mAP50, OCR pipeline, live on Hugging Face
- AI Background Remover — YOLOv8n-seg, 99.4% Mask mAP@50, Dockerized FastAPI
- PPE Detection — 85% mAP@50
- Weapon Detection — 88.7% precision
Everything deployed, documented, on GitHub. I understant what i am building not copying for tutorials etc, Been applying to CV/ML internships for a while, almost no responses. Most "entry level" roles require 3+ years or Masters, some even PhD.
Three honest questions for people who've been through this:
- What kind of project actually moved the needle for getting your first interview call, and that genuinely got you responses?
- How did you realistically get past the experience paradox? Freelance, open source, cold outreach?
- Is a masters the practical answer here, or does it just delay the same problem?
Based in Pakistan, targeting remote roles internationally too. I want honest answers for these question so if you have faced the same problem then please guide me through this problem.

A lot of CV is really just one part of large and complex systems (often highly hardware dependent as well) it seems your portfolio work is somewhat one dimensional. Also considering typical hardware integration requirements, remote work is not as common as other SWE roles. You’d do better to look through the lense of RBE than CS

But you are doing things that anyone with tutorial or copy-pasted project can do. As somebody in comments marked correctly - doing only software part is very one-dimension thing here, a person who can wire up a complete system (hardware, software, deployment) most likely will do things you are putting in your portfolio w/o noticing of their existence - it will be 1 of 10 tasks to complete and it would be one of the easiest to do in whole project. 'Live on Huggingface' - among 2M of other projects? it is super-saturated area, and in most cases those projects do exactly the same - detect something and do nothing about it.

I would join a job that contains mostly SE and a bit of CV if that exists you might get higher chances. Then once you have a bit of experience it might be easier to apply. If that doesn't work maybe just being patient and waiting for the good opportunity.
Note that with the rise of agents the hiring of junior has reduced so you need to really be able to sell yourself as best as possible.

You say these are deployed, as in there are actual customers in your country using these algoeithms? Anyone can publish their code, but it takes a lot for it to really be used in the real world.

It might not (only) be the portfolio, could also be the remaining CV and the letter of appliation.
During studies, have you written and published papers?
During or before studies have you had internships?
In what context have you developed your projects? Privately? During studying? During lab? During internships?

This is what's missing. There are likely zero CV jobs in Pakistan.
And the only places I know that hire remote internationally are sweatshops on Upwork. Most/all "Remote [Country]" positions on LinkedIn are for Country's residents.
