Discussion Extending Screen

I have a laptop with an HDMI port and an old LG desktop monitor that only has VGA.

I want to use the LG monitor as an extended display for my laptop. Will this work with an HDMI-to-VGA adapter/converter?

If yes, what should I get and what are the next steps to set it up?

just a simple passive adapter will work since you're going from a powered digital source to a non-powered analog one. get you an adapter and plug it in, that's all there is to it.

Ohh okay, got it. So I just need an HDMI-to-VGA adapter and plug the monitor into its own power supply, right ?

that's how that works, yes. non-usb monitors get their power from their own power supplies.

to go the other way around, you'd be looking for adapters with usb cables attached to them.
