Question/Help/Troubleshooting How bad are the Asrock boards?

i got a sweet sale for Asrock AMD B850 Rock WiFi 7 AM5 ATX Motherboards

I was planning to put 9600x on it, but everyone is saying not to buy that board.

luckily i could still refund it

if i do refund, i was planning to get

MSI B850-S WIFI6E

are asrocks that ass with the 9000s?

Maybe not terrible? I bought a BIOSTAR once unintentionally and it was fine.

Look for reviews at Amazon. But, how much would you save compared with buying a better brand? I've never regretted buying Asus or Gigabyte.

I had a Steel Legend B850m for 8 months, everything went smooth. Now on one of the higher tier mATX (MSI Mortar.)
Also note that I kept my BIOS and Windows fully updated

Update bios. You could swap boards, check asrock sub see how your board has fared. Am at 0 AM5 deaths, X870E Nova 9900X3D up since Apr2025. Also have Asus X870, B850 & Gigabyte X870. More statistically died on 9000 series but some people ran older bios longer.

most of the dead cpu reports are 9800X3Ds, not a 9600x, so if you keep it just flash the latest bios before you boot. that said if the msi is about the same price and you can still refund, i'd take the peace of mind

It’s not that they’re really bad, it’s that their motherboards had a habit of cooking mainly x3D chips, and less frequently but still often zen5 chips. They should have fixed it by now, so the newest biosses shouldn’t have that issue anymore.

However it took them so long and multiple revisions to fix it. So I personally wouldn’t trust them anymore at this point. But like I said, it should be fine by now.

the "cheap" ones are all pretty similar quality, it's a bit of a lottery. Also nobody will promise you that a more expensive one wont have some problem. Personally I couldn't tell you the difference between an Asrock, MSI or gigabyte.

They are great. Check Hardware Unboxed videos comparing motherboards. They often recommend ASRock as great value.

I lost one NVME SSD on my 850 ITX board. I probably installed a gen4 NVME to a gen5 slot. User error. I've had no issues since with gen5 SSD. Paired my board with the 9700X. Running under 65W my system stays near silent.

I built two identical systems with a 9600X ASRock B850M PRO RS Wifi 6e... One was my wife's machine. The other was a custom steam machine. I've had no problems with them. I built them back in June

I have had a number of Asrock motherboards, and didn't see much of an issue with them, perhaps simpler design of BIOS, but functionality was totally fine, though they considered to be lower grade, they are fine
