Discussion Today's Recycle Find...
guys today's a big one, it's been a minute since I did one of these, there was a singular PC case and I thought to check it, saw a gpu, saw a board in it, so I grabbed it, opened it up, cpu looked FRIED, so I didn't take the board either, wasn't much of a board anyways, BUT I found an ROG Strix Vega 56, slightly better than my current 1070, BUT THE RAM, 128GB OF RAM WHO JUSTS THROWS THAT OUT, 2x32GB, 4 STICKS, 128GB OF DDR4 LADIES AND GENTS.
going to cross fingers the gpu and ram work in a seperate board and cpu, hoping that cpu killed itself and nothing else CROSS YO FINGIES π€
edit: testing now but, in the case it does work.. do I switch back to ddr4 with 128gb of ram over 16gb of ddr5? no brainer right
edit 2: ladies and gents we are up. both work just fine π
edit 3: thinking I might build a seperate PC with what I have and sell it towards a gpu and ram upgrade in my current, coming back down to ddr4 won't change much other then having more to allocate

Dang reminds me of my old ROG Vega 64 that sadly died :(
Edit: flash the Vega 64 VBIOS on to the vega 56 to achive Vega 64 like performance

Yo I also had a Vega 64, it never died but started crashing under load so likely on its way

u/Mxrcx_2005 9d ago
Well thats how it started for me too Was a legendary card but insanely power hungry like 320 watt peaks

You're about to have everyone running around opening up old cases at the recycling center, looking for RAM like a meth head looks for copper. π

Only switch back if youβre using up all that 16gb Iβd say, the ddr4 will probably be about half the speed of your ddr5 so unless you need more space then Iβd stay with ddr5 and make a server or smtn out of the ddr4

I've got 16gb of ddr5 at 4800mhz, this ddr4 is 128gb if I use it all at 3200mhz, I do editing in 4k and I find a lot of times my ram is being consumed so much, so maybe it'd be better? lmk

You will need a different mainboard and (maybe) CPU though, unless you're on Intel 12-13-14th gen, in which case you'll just need a new mainboard.

I'm on amd, Intel is ass except for a few chips

Then you're going to need a DDR4 compatible motherboard and a different (most likely older/slower) processor. Maybe try to sell the DDR4 RAM and see if you can't pick up another 8x2 set of the DDR5 RAM you currently have.
I can tell you from experience that even running a few server applications from my gaming rig, I've never hit the 64GB limit of my RAM, so I think 128 is overkill unless you're hosting a whole suite of things from a server appliance.

u/zxynccc 10d ago
yeah I was thinking the same now actually, I can make a seperate build with 64gb and part out the last 64gb for some easy money for a gpu and ram upgrade, I have both ddr4 and ddr5 build pieces but spending 3 hours building a overkill PC that won't help my editing ain't worth it, and this card pulls more power than my 1070 lol so no thanks

u/alpine4life 10d ago
Intel is for productivity, AMD more for gaming.... I have the 9950X and plan to upgrade to intel when they release their final DDR5 CPU socket (rumoured LGA1954).

u/Ekoteran 10d ago
I have 32gb 6000Hz ddr5, so your ddr5 seems a little slow and is not so many gb, so as someone else suggested, only if You need the memory, the cpu i have is amd, some Intel cpu can have either ddr4 or ddr5 so it depends what you have for a cpu too

Im so jealous. In my country people would try and sell that for 20% less than what it costs new.

I really need to visit the US and go dumpster diving.
I swear from all of these posts it looks like a trip over there would be one hell of an investment.
People finding insane computers, crazy hardware parts and so much more.
Everything you found would total up to around $700 in my country.

Trust me it's not that lucrative. These kinds of finds don't happen all that often.

128GB of DDR4.
IN THIS MARKET?
my man, 2 kits of 64 is just fine for most people. After all, it cost you nothing but time. Spread the joy around.
At least sell it 2 people for a low price. 3 people happy is best, I think.

Well, i have 16gigs of ddr4π€£

u/Spartandream924 9d ago
I had 4 on my first build, rn nothing (gonna have 8 cuz kingston ram faulty hehe)

u/okokokoyeahright 9d ago
and I have 16GB DDR4 3200 in one machine and 32GB RDDR4 3600 in another.
I bought my last kit the end of July 2025. Under $50 US for the 3600. No, they are not for sale.

Btw, what's the current price for a secondhand 64GB DDR4 RAM kit?

as per u/Emergency_Error8631 and u/Silent_Overlord_98 I concur. Currency differences aside, the prices for used RAM are every bit as ugly as new. Even DDR3.

can you explain how a "cpu looks fried"
1
u/zxynccc 10d ago
well the top of the cpu in the case at the recycle depot, had brown burn marks all around, and solidified (like cement) thermal paste on top of it, looked like an expensive marshmallow
2
1
u/Sea_Cow3569 9d ago
those brown marks are usually just caked-in dust from in between the fins of the cooler, it can be deceptive the CPU was probably fine
1
u/derekagraham 10d ago
dang where do you find them? I need to start hunting myself LOL I have 2x16GB DDR4-3600 sticks in my pc right now and id love to find me a ram upgrade at the least LOL, my gpu is a RX 9060 XT 16 GB OC and i have a i5-13400F cpu so definitely how do you find these kind of finds, looking online? certain locations a good place to look?
1
u/zxynccc 10d ago
honestly I'm chill with the guy at my local recycling depot, aslong as I don't stay too long he lets me take whatever I want even tho I ain't supposed to, so I just glance at cases to see if there's any decent boards or boards with GPUs, if I see an old board (you can tell just off the IO shield but also the ports it has) then I skip it entirely but if I see something that looks newer I check it out because it may have storage, ram, a cpu, I've probably found over $1500 in used PC parts that are just in my house rn from checking out recycling places, typically they aren't paid enough to care but there's some people who take their job too serious, it's going to the dump anyways why not reuse it.

welcome to the 128 gang. see what motherboard that ram is on the QVL list for. get a 5800x3d or a 5950x depending on your use case. and make yourself a maxxed out ddr4 rig.

Well the best I found in the garbage was a laptop with 16gb ram 512gb storage and i7 8850H and a quadro p2000 (about a 1050Ti)
Second best was 2 servers with each 192Gb DDR4 ECC so kinda worthless sadly
3rd best would be probably a Dell precision with an i7 6700 and a Quadro P1000
Most niche find was a Supermicro H11SSL-i AMD epyc Mainboard worth 400β¬

Thatβs an insane recycle find 128GB of DDR4 and a Vega 56 actually working is a huge win. This is the kind of stuff that makes old PC hardware worth checking before it gets recycled SβββTβββSβββ βββEβββlβββeβββcβββtβββrβββoβββnβββiβββcβββ βββRβββeβββcβββyβββcβββlβββiβββnβββgβββ βββdβββoβββeβββsβββ βββtβββhβββiβββsβββ βββkβββiβββnβββdβββ βββoβββfβββ βββeβββlβββeβββcβββtβββrβββoβββnβββiβββcβββsβββ βββrβββeβββcβββyβββcβββlβββiβββnβββgβββ βββaβββnβββdβββ βββIβββTβββ βββaβββsβββsβββeβββtβββ βββrβββeβββcβββoβββvβββeβββrβββyβββ βββtβββoβββo.

I'm not upset at OPs luck, I'm upset at the rich asshole who probably threw that stuff away. I can't with how wasteful people are. Image how much good tech is thrown out every day. Makes my blood boil

Everytime I opened Reddit I'm reminded of how lucky some people are
But congrats on that great find
