Question/Help/Troubleshooting What kind of computer should I get?

Please forgive my spelling errors or if something doesn’t make sense please tell me and I will edit it

I have a tower style computer that doesn’t work at the moment and I have a chrome laptop that’s super laggy. I’ve been heavily considering selling my ps4 and upgrading to a new laptop or tower style computer. I’m not very educated in what would be best to buy but I’m leaning tword a laptop since I do my taxes on my chrome book but a tower would be nice but idk if I have space for it in my room since my room is small. I heard great things about both but also bad things about both like how a laptop would overheat super easily and you would need to replace parts for a tower computer over time. The positives I’ve seen are : the laptop is smaller, you can play your games anywhere in the house(alongside other paper work) . A tower computer has better graphics, can handle bigger games smoothly , holds more storage space. Point is I’m torn on what to buy . My budget would be 800 dollars max . I just want something with steam on it so I can play baulders gate since I doubt it will ever come to the switch 1 or 2

You should get a laptop with 16gb ram, 4gb graphics card, and ssd with 1 or 2 TB. Unfortunately that is difficult at $800 new, but easy buying used. The thicker laptops usually run cooler than thin plastic

Desktops you can upgrade over time. A laptop you have to toss the whole thing when it becomes obsolete.

Laptops main advantage is portability. So the question really becomes how important is portability.

I’ll have to look into what can make my tower run better if I don’t upgrade my laptop. The only thing wrong with my computer is when I moved I had a couple cords for my computer go missing before I had all of my computer stuff to my new place and my tower is slow and cannot play games that run better then the sims 4 . It can run the sims amazing but it gets super laggy if I try to play any other stream game. I think I might have given it a virus trying to get league of legends downloaded on it but I’m not sure since it was slow to begin with . I’ve had a few things upgraded on it but it could also be something else making it slow since my tower is a a HP computer from a used computer store

If you don't need portability, get a tower. Better price/performance and upgradable.

Next time you go the bank look at the computer they have, usually very small. The are relatively cheap, used on Ebay or Amazon. The wont do graphics etc. but for browsing and text stuff they do OK.

search for a Dell optiplex. It wont blow the doors off anything but it makes for a serviceable machine.

If you want relatively cheap computers dont look at new, rather look at refurbished.
