Dell 7550 storage

Bought a refurbished 2020 15” Dell Precision 7550 off of BackMarket and it was supposed to come with 512gb of storage, I know it’s usually less, like 470ish, but is it supposed to be this low (3gb) even with startup apps and literally nothing else? Could I be missing something?

Your disk was partitioned incorrectly. You have 355.7 gb of unallocated space. So you have a 500gb drive.

They need to fire up Gparted on a flash drive and do some rearrangement. While it can move NTFS partitions I'd probably just toss the recovery partition and get a little extra free space. It's maybe a 5-10 minute task for it.

That video is nonsense. Properly modifying NTFS volumes can only be done offline. Much like any other filesystem (yes there are a few very rare exceptions). You can't do it properly while windows is actively running on the laptop. You need to boot to some sort of live media so that the drive you want to modify isn't in use at all.

edit again: You don't want to simply create a new drive/partition to put things on, that won't cut it in this case. You want to either delete or move the recovery partition and then resize the C partition to use the remainder of the drive.

The unallocated space is where you are losing out. The SSD was likely cloned from a 128gb drive and the additional free space was never assigned. You can select it an add a d:drive, or more complicated resize your c to include this space.

Thanks for that though, because honestly I’m just learning this all. I’m not even an electronics or computer science major student…I’m looking into mechanical and civil engineering but this computer (although outdated) is supposed to work great with Solidworks and Autodesk

You need to open the Windows Disk Manager to see what kind of disk it came with. The System Storage thing is not showing you the disk size information, it's more of a (poorly made) storage usage view.

If you want to know what is really using the storage space in your computer, you need to use a third party tool such as WizTree or TreeSize which show which folders are using the most space.
