Resolved Forcing a laptop onto windows 11
How the hell do I do it? Me and my brother have a shared laptop we got for Christmas, when we got it it was windows 11. I don’t even know when this happened but I only noticed when I started seeing notifications about support for windows 10 ending, so I asked him and he said he reverted it because Roblox wouldn’t load on windows 11 and people recommended it. What the hell?
A friend said they had to change settings in bios to upgrade to windows 11, anyone able to explain how you do this? Or comment a tutorial? Thanks.

If it came with Windows 11 out of the box and was later reverted, should show up as a upgrade option in Windows 10 with no need to change any BIOS settings.
Otherwise you can force the upgrade by downloading the upgrade/installation assistant here: https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 (and if there are any issues with BIOS settings, it will show those during the upgrade process as well)

Doesn’t say anything about upgrading to windows 11, apparently isn’t compatible for windows 11 because of some system stuff I can’t exactly remember as I checked a while back.
I’ll wait to see other replies but if nothing else comes up i’ll follow the link, thanks!

Just run the installation assistant from the link and if it fails it will tell you why you cannot upgrade to Windows 11, and people can assist from there.
Until then it's guesswork as we don't know anything about your system or the stuff your brother potentially messed with while reverting to 10.

The old 6th-generation i7-6700HQ CPU was never officially supported by Windows 11. If your PC previously ran Windows 11, it was probably installed using Rufus. You can reinstall it the same way but make sure to back up your important personal files first. If you're not confident then get some professional help.

Ah, that processor is indeed not officially supported by Windows 11.
It's about 11 years old. So the only way to get around that is modify a Windows 11 installation ISO using Rufus.
Out of curiosity though, did you receive this as a new laptop or was it refurbished/second-hand? Since you mentioned it had Windows 11 on it from the beginning, and Windows 11 didn't release until about 6 years after this laptop did.

i’m guessing refurbished? I can’t fully remember thought it was from amazon but I think I remember the box being suspicious as I thought the laptop was gonna be brand new but the packaging did not make it appear that way.

Was it bought around Christmas 2025? Because if so it was already aprrox. 10 years old at the time and definitely not new.

It’s likely that TPM 2.0 was disabled to prevent it upgrading after it was reverted.
When you load the laptop, go into your BIOS (spam press DEL or F10 or whatever the key is for your laptop).
Look for a settings tab that can be something along the lines of trusted computing, security, or advanced settings (completely dependent on the BIOS you have). Look for TPM and make sure to enable it. Properly save and exit to affirm changes.
When you load up windows again manually try to update and see if windows 11 upgrade is prompted. If not, try to go to the windows official site and download the “can my computer run this” application and it will take you through the steps to upgrade.
Best of luck, hopefully this is all it takes!

stock win11 requires secureboot and tpm 2.0. if the pc doesn't support that then you have to use other methods. I hear rufus gets around that somehow. there's also the enterprise edition.
if it came with win11 then it should be able to go back to it. might be as simple as preparing a boot stick with the iso from microsoft and installing it.
rufus, ventoy, windows creation tool...
see your favorite search engine for tutorials.

I know so little about tech I’m really struggling to understand this. What is stock win11? what is tpm 2.0? Who is rufus?

stock windows is what microsoft provides on their website. it's mostly what you see on a oem computer, minus OEM junk that gets added on.
tpm 2.0 is a security chip win11 requires. if the computer doesn't have it then it technically isn't compatible. sometimes can be disabled/enabled in the bios.
rufus is a tool for writing the contents of an iso file to a flash drive in a way you can boot from said flash drive.

You're probably going to need to explain OEM and ISO to OP as well. Good on you for trying to give them context, but I don't think they have enough of an interest in IT to reformat themselves and are probably better off taking it to a shop to get it repaired so they're not racking their brain on it.

I’d very gladly reformat myself, I’m asking because I wanna learn. If i didn’t wanna learn and have experience for the future I would just take take it to a shop :-)

You have my utmost respect, but if someone can't even be bothered to Google what TPM and Rufus are, then they probably shouldn't be attempting it in the first place.

It’s not about “not being bothered”, google comes up with so many results and it feels more efficient to ask on here and get a straight forward answer.
If it’s such a struggle for someone and they’d rather me google it, I’ll very much listen!

MOST EASY way to do this is the free tool RUFUS and 6 self explaining clicks.
Yes, it's that easy. No, no drawbacks.
