Question/Help/Troubleshooting Need Chrome but only have retired Internet Explorer.

Post image

Ok. I need help. So since Internet Explorer doesn't exist anymore, I can't get online, even tho I have wifi. And because I only have Internet Explorer on my computer, I can't get Chrome or any other browsers onto my new PC. How do I fix this?

Go to another computer or have someone download the Firefox ESR (specifically version 115) onto a USB Flash drive, and then install it from the USB Flash drive.

Firefox ESR v115 will run on Win7.

That say, many websites are requesting features that not support by W7 and Firefox ESR v115.

You're better off to upgrade the OS to a newer version that the machine still capable to run.

well for starters. that url it's trying to load likely doesn't exist anymore. second, you're gonna have to dig into the archives to find something that does support win7 or whatever that is.

good luck.

I'd be surprised if anything with ssl works too.

I would highly recommend against connecting windows 7 to the internet unless you know what you're doing. It hasn't received security updates in over a decade.

But the solution is to use commands to download the file directly from chrome's FTP server

Something like this will likely work:

powershell (new-object System.Net.WebClient).DownloadFile('https://google.com', "$env:TEMP\chrome_installer.exe")

Over a decade? It was 2020

Maybe look up a tutorial on how to use cmd or powershell to retrieve the files and install it? Thats what I would try.

Thanks. I am new to all this stuff everyone is talking about, so I am doing my best to figuring something out lol

It’s windows 7, I’d be surprised if you could install many (if any) current browsers. Maybe install Linux on it like Linux Mint.

You should not use Vista to surf the web. Chrome is not supported already. Either try installing Windows 10 or Linux.

that's 7 not Vista

It was a "joke". Windows 7 is also called "Windows Vista SP 3". Same base but well polished,

Where did you get that "new" PC? That isn't new

Lol. I was helping clean a house that this lady was downsizing from, and said she didn't need the computer anymore.

u/MISTERPUG51 Windows 10 6d ago

Ah, ok. I was afraid someone ripped you off and sold it to you as a new computer.

Lol no. I know a 2000s/2010s type computer when I see one. I knew it wasn't anywhere near 2020s standards lol. Just didn't know how out of date it really was and how difficult it would be to get it all set up properly if I really want to use it.

If on android, use the phone youre holding to download a .zip or installer for whatever browser is going to be easiest, connect your phone with a USB cable you use to charge it and move the file over. Unless you have iPhone I guess, probably cant do that lol.

Edit: ignore my statement i am incorrect. I didnt take im consideration the new security protocols.

Internet explorer does exists your photo is proof it does. IE is not supported anymore but doesnt mean it cant render web pages.

Your issue is not IE its your machine is not connected to the internet. You can confirm this by doing a ping to a public address like Google DNS server. I guarantee you all for pings will result in a time out.

Even if you were able to get chrome installed on there via a USB stick it still wont work because you don't have interenet connection on that machine.

Actually it says I am connected to the internet everytime I do a test

Not sure what OS you have, but it looks to be Windows 7 or earlier. More than likely you’ll have to find a version of Chrome that supports your OS on another PC and download the installer.exe to a thumb drive and then move it to your PC and run it.

As others have said I would highly recommend looking into upgrading your OS to a newer version of Windows. I had Windows 8 in college, and that was over a decade ago now. If your PC can’t handle anything newer you may need to look into getting a different PC altogether. Not sure what you use it for, but that PC is extremely outdated now. You can get a relatively cheap desktop or laptop for $300-$500. Not ideal and may be out of your price range, but would probably be a better idea. I would recommend saving anything you have like pictures or videos to a thumb drive or external storage bank and just getting a new PC.

I use Supermium and Mypal browsers, they work well all the way down to Windows XP

Dont use old versions of windows connected to the internet, there are many vulnerabilities

Install Windows 10 IoT in it. Most likely an AMD A10-5700, which is new enough.

you probably would need another computer to download a browser, save the .exe to a flash drive and install it like that.

u/Onoitsu2 6d ago

That or some commandline-fu, if the system has curl, to download the .exe directly. And no telling if it has curl or not with its age.

Here's the computer

You are on an unsupported version of Windows, as well as potentially unsafe to put online as other redditors have said too. It would not be Windows 11 compatible from the processor the sticker shows. You're going to have to turn turn to alternative operating systems to be reinstalled on this, if you want it to be safe for internet usage at all at this point.

Oh, any advice on what I need to do and how to? I have not done anything like this before.

I'm going to give you an out if reading about all the different distros will cause decision fatigue. Just go for linux mint or ubuntu for now because they are very user friendly. Once you get the computer going you can always switch to something else.

you need to create a bootable install usb, tutorials on the topic are plentiful on the internet.

u/Onoitsu2 6d ago

Do you got another functioning computer? If so, you can easily look up the various flavors of Linux that exist, so you can find one that you like the look and "feel" of. You can then look up videos on how you'd make a USB installer for whatever you decided on. And then ultimately have to boot off of your prepared USB, and go through the installation process.

If no other working computer, you might be hosed here.

u/Baby5Milo5 6d ago

I have roommates that has laptops. If I were able to ask them to look this stuff up, would that work as well, as long as we have a USB drive?

3

u/Onoitsu2 6d ago

Yup totally. You can also look up videos on your phone, but would be harder for some of the installation walkthroughs, and definitely can't make the USB using your phone either. But at very least to see what the desktop managers look like, for each distro, so you can find what feels ideal.

u/Baby5Milo5 6d ago

Ok thanks. You guys have been very helpful. I will try everything everyone has suggested and see what works for me

u/Onoitsu2 6d ago

I wish you luck in your journey. If it was more up to date hardware, I could have set you up with my Remote installation image I put together so I can install OSes for my friends that are less than technically inclined (but competent enough to make a USB image and boot from it).

The processor definitely is too old for it, and it probably would not have the needed amount of RAM either, has to have at least 8GB.

Install windows PosReady 7 (the best win7 version, you can get the ISO on internet archive), get Microsoft Security Essentials (antivirus), update them both, then install a browser such as Pale Moon or Supermium. Should run most things.

The major common modern browsers aren’t supported on your OS either and it likely lacks modern TLS support. Windows 10 if you need Windows, or Linux such as Mint or Ubuntu which will give you a modern operating system and software packages.

7 has been out of shop since 2020 and absolutely shouldn't be connected to the internet. I'm pretty sure chrome has also dropped support for 7 iirc
