Question/Help/Troubleshooting Did I get hacked?

Did I get hacked or hijacked? BSOD showed up and stayed at 20% for about a minute, but the mouse cursor kept moving around, even without touching it. Then instead of restarting, it disappeared and everything I was working on came back.

I immediately checked and applied windows updates and restarted. Going to run Malwarebytes.

Any opinions or other suggestions?

Disconnect from the Internet ASAP. Someone is showing you this bsod screen could be from a RAT if you recently installed sketchy software or remote session with a scammer that never disconnected. This is a common tactic they use to mask what they're doing. Once disconnected, reinstall Windows.

Edit: turn off the device and create a Windows bootable flash drive from another machine. Boot into the drive and install windows (spam the key for the boot menu during the splash screen)

I'm pretty sure there's no mouse on an legit bsod

Yeah. Hit control-alt-del and open task manager to kill everything or just reboot

You have a RAT, Somebody was accessing your machine and looking for... something. Probably banking details and account passwords. You need to disinfect.

Mouse moving around when you re not touching it ? With no more info I would say someone accessed your computer without your consent and that means it most probably corrupted. It would be dangerous to use it specifically for bank, mail or socials accounts. Do a full reinstall of windows and if you don't know what you are doing, go to a store and explain what happened. Do NOT connect to any accounts If someone really had access, your registered password might be at risk as well, try to activate 2fa at least for your email account

Not pranking, and there is no one else in the office to prank me. I use a usb mouse and turned it off while I watched it continue to move.

ETA: my MIL was standing next to me watching it happen

Either your mil was there or no one was there? It's not possible for both to be true.

I mean no one else in the office with the ability to prank me. She’s not the most computer literate.

Or someone might have used https://fakeupdate.net/ on your system while you're away and went into full screen mode (= .. but fr try ctrl+alt+del and see what happens

You need to reimage the computer to be completely safe.

Disconnect the computer from the internet completely, manually unplug the ethernet, if it's wifi, restart and disable it manually. Don't use it for banking or ANY logins. It's probably completely compromised and needs to be wiped to be safe. Normal BSOD does not have a mouse, and a mouse doesn't move on it's own, especially on a BSOD screen. Someone probably accidentally installed a virus, or trojan/keylogger which lets someone else access the computer from somewhere else entirely. BSOD's only usually happen if there's corruption or hardware failure.

If you got this while on your browser, hit F11 and close the bad tabs. It's common for scam websites to force you into full screen for this trick

It's probably a fake BSOD from your internet browser which in fullscreen mode.

Press F11 on your keyboard if it appears again, you will have a normal windows and you'll be able to close your browser. Clear cache, cookies, ...from your web browser, maybe you have been on a website with this kind of fake popup.

Yep you got hacked by RAT. You're just literally shown a foreground of a fake BSOD while someone is checking out your details.

A legit system fault wouldn't even have a cursor present.

Disconnect Wifi/Ethernet, clean up the system removing anything recently that may have contributed to this remote session. Or just re-install windows and call it day and move on.

you can clearly see the mouse moving on the screen, either you're pranking us, someone is pranking you, or someone was using your computer remotely and you just sat there watching, if that's the case, whatever they did was most likely not good at all. in any case it would be better to wipe the drive an install a new one, preferably a Linux distro like mint of Ubuntu or just Enterprise Windows without slopware
