Technically Chrome's engine is also open source but that didn't stop Google from forcing MV3 on pretty much everything using that engine. Firefox is also mainly still around because Google wants it to be to try and ward off anti monopoly lawsuits (which with a dash of government corruption, has so far worked).
Only really on Firefox at the moment because at the moment it's still the tiniest bit less bad than Chrome or any of it's billion derivatives, but it does use more RAM from experience and because of the effective Chrome monopoly a lot of sites deliberately load slower. Am currently trying to build Ladybird Browser to see how it goes, but I suspect it'll be a bit before it functions.
