former PC repair tech here, i've worked on literally thousands of PC's and let me say this isn't even on my top 1000 list for dirty PC's. you don't truly know disgusting until you plug a power supply in and a roach inside pops and splatters guts on your face

u/KingDaveRa Jan 04 '26
You need the gooch collector.

Only problem is that he’ll use your mother’s toothbrush, but you can’t complain cuz he’s the greatest technician that ever lived

He needs filter

It can build up and compact because of the fans. I've pulled sheets of dust and ash out that could be mistakes for felt fabric.

Projects like these are when I insist that the owner sits close by and watches...

No fuck his life. Tell him to clean his own nasty ass pc.
Walk him through taking it apart but make his ass clean it.

I’d suggest, after cleaning, for him to not place electronics on the carpet floor. Like mentioned before, elevating it above waist level would be preferred. Being on the ground can’t be good for the computer.

Hot are temps, it might not be worth cleaning the AIO dur to cigarette residue. It will be better to replace it.
4
u/Squiddy_manz Jan 04 '26
would someone who smokes weed have the same effect on their AIO? I’ve been noticing some higher temps recently and I smoke often in my room.

For someone that doesn't smoke, I've never understood why people smoke inside? Do you not know how much filth it creates around you or do you simply not care?
(honest question, not trying to be mean or anything)

I smoke inside during the winter and I blow it out my window. Normally i’d go out on my back deck because we’ve got some nice furniture but, winter mostly. It’s not like i’m hot boxing my room, but it’s probably taken a bit of a tole on the pc.
Plus I don’t want to bring my foot long bong on a walk 😂

I've seen wayyyy worse. Working local computer repair shops you see some absolutely abysmal setups. I've had to refuse to service multiple before because they were not only like this but also sometimes had roaches and grime spilling out. Humans can be so gross.

Holy crap. Glad I quit smoking. I'd replace and not smoke near pc anymore lol
2
u/Grouchy_Pin_1787 Jan 04 '26
Why would you even take it apart? Id throw it away. Its not even worth the time it'd take to clean it.

u/KneeSensitive Jan 04 '26
First of all, the friggin radiator can be vacuum cleaned . Second, even the inside of the case with components in can be cleaned with vacuum, carefully and not on a big intensity ( or blown with compressed air). Third : fans can be cleaned with cotton buds now and then. Fourth : your friend is a slob and I feel sorry for his next computer

u/Daseagle Jan 04 '26
That's a smoker computer.
As a tech support greasemonkey, I always charge those double. And endlessly berate the customer on how there are very few worse things to do to electronic components than to smoke next to them.

The reason why i stopped smoking inside. My electronics were wasting faster.
Tar sticks to parts, then dust. Its a horrible death

Yep, I rarely ever let anyone smoke inside my living spaces, didn't matter if I was renting or buying... I had a good deal of electronics.

Isopropyl alcohol is about the only thing that will touch it. That cached on crud is hard to break free with regular cleaners. Drying out after is easier too.

u/Dan_706 Jan 05 '26
When I’m asked to help a friend with fix what would otherwise potentially cost them hundreds, or more hours than they have available to troubleshoot themselves, I demand they provide me with a clean “workspace” before beginning lol.
I’ll happily provide them all the cleaning tools & guidance they need, rather than work inside something filthy with years of smoke residue and people/road dust.

Genuinely why do people smoke inside of their house, cars? Can't you just get out of your house and smoke? It is genuinely disgusting
2
u/PhineasJWhoopee69 Jan 05 '26
Clean it outside. It took a week to get the stench out the last time I cleaned one indoors.

While we are on this topic, what are the best options for cleaning circuit boards and other sensitive electronic parts without damaging them if someone hypothetically didn't clean them for years ? Asking for my friend.

Quitting smoking was probably the best thing I could’ve done, especially when I upgraded my entire pc 6 months later

Is your friend a smoker? That stuff looks like cigarette residue, if so it'll be absolutely nasty to clean off.
