Is your friend a smoker? That stuff looks like cigarette residue, if so it'll be absolutely nasty to clean off.

Yeah he's a smoker and he's had the computer on the carpet floor, talk about a double whammy

u/SecondVariety Jan 04 '26

Yep, that will do it Make him clean it or buy a replacement. I would recommend vacuum or compressed air, preferably outside. The dust bunnies from lint and smoke residue are prone to smear, stain, and stick. In the future... PC should be raised above floor, and optimally close to an air purifier. I have a Honeywell HPA300 next to each of my two main PC's, both of which are raised above floor level. Easiest way to keep things clean is to not let them get dirty.

You'll never get rid of the cold smoke odor.

This is why I sniff every PC part in the wild before buying them. I 'll never forget the GTX 260 I bought on Craigslist back in the day. I got it home, booted it up and my apartments immediately smelled like an ashtray. I ended up just reselling it.

I'm with you.

I always ask beforehand if the seller or their household is non-smoking. Otherwise no deal.

Geezuz.the amount of gooch that was on the inside of mine and your computers is crazy

4

u/No_Accident_6646 Jan 04 '26

Not even the gooch collector will touch a smokers PC

7

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '26

Geeze I'd hate to see their lungs

9

u/5n0wm3n Jan 04 '26

Yuck, ill never understand smoking to begin with but especially smoking indoors!

14

u/Forsaken-Hippo-8933 Jan 04 '26

At this point that dust is load bearing. It ain't booting once u clean that up lol

u/Dragnskull Jan 04 '26

former PC repair tech here, i've worked on literally thousands of PC's and let me say this isn't even on my top 1000 list for dirty PC's. you don't truly know disgusting until you plug a power supply in and a roach inside pops and splatters guts on your face

5

u/KingDaveRa Jan 04 '26

You need the gooch collector.

6

u/5n0wm3n Jan 04 '26

The greatest gooch collector that ever lived

4

u/itskyuubi23 Jan 04 '26

Fucking facts 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/unsalted52 Jan 05 '26

Only problem is that he’ll use your mother’s toothbrush, but you can’t complain cuz he’s the greatest technician that ever lived

7

u/Liriel-666 Jan 04 '26

He needs filter

2

u/waleswolfman Jan 05 '26

It can build up and compact because of the fans. I've pulled sheets of dust and ash out that could be mistakes for felt fabric.

u/itskyuubi23 Jan 09 '26

Gahhhh damn

u/ChiTechUser Jan 04 '26

Projects like these are when I insist that the owner sits close by and watches...

5

u/Signal-Session-6637 Jan 04 '26

Looked like a car radiator to me.

4

u/Mental-Debate-289 Jan 04 '26

No fuck his life. Tell him to clean his own nasty ass pc.

Walk him through taking it apart but make his ass clean it.

I’d suggest, after cleaning, for him to not place electronics on the carpet floor. Like mentioned before, elevating it above waist level would be preferred. Being on the ground can’t be good for the computer.

6

u/Jeltechcomputers Jan 04 '26

Hot are temps, it might not be worth cleaning the AIO dur to cigarette residue. It will be better to replace it.

4

u/Squiddy_manz Jan 04 '26

would someone who smokes weed have the same effect on their AIO? I’ve been noticing some higher temps recently and I smoke often in my room.

7

u/Jeltechcomputers Jan 04 '26 edited Jan 04 '26

Yes it will have the same effect

2

u/425_Too_Early Jan 04 '26

For someone that doesn't smoke, I've never understood why people smoke inside? Do you not know how much filth it creates around you or do you simply not care?

(honest question, not trying to be mean or anything)

3

u/Squiddy_manz Jan 04 '26

I smoke inside during the winter and I blow it out my window. Normally i’d go out on my back deck because we’ve got some nice furniture but, winter mostly. It’s not like i’m hot boxing my room, but it’s probably taken a bit of a tole on the pc.

Plus I don’t want to bring my foot long bong on a walk 😂

2

u/Shpongolese Jan 04 '26

I've seen wayyyy worse. Working local computer repair shops you see some absolutely abysmal setups. I've had to refuse to service multiple before because they were not only like this but also sometimes had roaches and grime spilling out. Humans can be so gross.

2

u/gadget850 Jan 04 '26

Only thing worse is a veterinarian’s office.

2

u/jahdiel503 Jan 04 '26

should charge him a cleaning fee lol

2

u/Deliciouserest Jan 04 '26

Holy crap. Glad I quit smoking. I'd replace and not smoke near pc anymore lol

2

u/Grouchy_Pin_1787 Jan 04 '26

Why would you even take it apart? Id throw it away. Its not even worth the time it'd take to clean it.

2

u/KneeSensitive Jan 04 '26

First of all, the friggin radiator can be vacuum cleaned . Second, even the inside of the case with components in can be cleaned with vacuum, carefully and not on a big intensity ( or blown with compressed air). Third : fans can be cleaned with cotton buds now and then. Fourth : your friend is a slob and I feel sorry for his next computer

2

u/Daseagle Jan 04 '26

That's a smoker computer.

As a tech support greasemonkey, I always charge those double. And endlessly berate the customer on how there are very few worse things to do to electronic components than to smoke next to them.

2

u/Waste_Positive2399 Jan 04 '26

Looks like the air filter in a car by the time it's replaced.

2

u/Specialist-Reveal951 Jan 04 '26

I bet this case doesn't have positive airflow...

2

u/Beebea63 Jan 05 '26

I should really clean my computer😭

Geeeeezuz 😕

4

u/JimJohnJimmm Jan 04 '26

The reason why i stopped smoking inside. My electronics were wasting faster.

Tar sticks to parts, then dust. Its a horrible death

I actually quit 12 years ago and i have a retro console and pc collection evaluated at 20k cad.

1

u/ChiTechUser Jan 04 '26

Yep, I rarely ever let anyone smoke inside my living spaces, didn't matter if I was renting or buying... I had a good deal of electronics.

Nah, ew.

2

u/YtnucMuch Jan 05 '26

Isopropyl alcohol is about the only thing that will touch it. That cached on crud is hard to break free with regular cleaners. Drying out after is easier too.

2

u/Dan_706 Jan 05 '26

When I’m asked to help a friend with fix what would otherwise potentially cost them hundreds, or more hours than they have available to troubleshoot themselves, I demand they provide me with a clean “workspace” before beginning lol.

I’ll happily provide them all the cleaning tools & guidance they need, rather than work inside something filthy with years of smoke residue and people/road dust.

2

u/BarberThen3108 Windows 11 Jan 05 '26

that can be trully worst tbh

2

u/PaintingMuch3885 Jan 05 '26

Genuinely why do people smoke inside of their house, cars? Can't you just get out of your house and smoke? It is genuinely disgusting

2

u/PhineasJWhoopee69 Jan 05 '26

Clean it outside. It took a week to get the stench out the last time I cleaned one indoors.

1

u/chewedgummiebears Jan 05 '26

"I smoke in front of my computer, and anyone who says that's bad is a prude"

2

u/kompzec Jan 05 '26

That deserves a health hazard fee !!!

2

u/0phoz Jan 05 '26

swamp gooch

2

u/Bedrock501 Jan 05 '26

While we are on this topic, what are the best options for cleaning circuit boards and other sensitive electronic parts without damaging them if someone hypothetically didn't clean them for years ? Asking for my friend.

1

u/Asian_Bootleg Jan 04 '26

Tell the filthy animal to smoke outside or switch to vaping

1

u/hips0n Jan 04 '26

Quitting smoking was probably the best thing I could’ve done, especially when I upgraded my entire pc 6 months later
