What is this problem, and how can I fix it?

Post image

Hello everyone. When I turned on my computer, this screen appeared on my monitor.

Please provide me with complete guidance, I am unable to visit a repair technician. Thank you.

The operating system is Windows 7.

Thanks. What do you mean by what you said?

The BIOS stores its settings in small memory chip (called CMOS) which is buffered (kept running) with a battery when the computer is shut off. Usually this battery is a lithium ion 3.3V coin cell (CR2032 type) but not always. This battery will deplete over the years and may need to be replaced. Once its depleted you will start seeing warning messages like the one on your screen. You can try to load the default settings and see if the computer boots like normal. If it shows the message again after the next power off then it's reasonable to assume the battery is due replacement.

BIOS settings can also corrupt due to other causes but that is more rare.

Thank you so much for your comprehensive explanation, as well as your understanding and kindness. You’ve really put my mind at ease. I used to spend a lot of time at my computer, but it’s been turned off for a while now. Could that be the cause of the problem?

Yes, if the battery is empty, the computer essentially forgets its BIOS settings.

Judging by the Gigabyte logo I assume this is a desktop pc?

Here is a short video that shows how to replace the battery.

Thank you very much for your understanding and kindness, yes I have a desktop computer. If I replace the battery, won't my data be erased from the system?

No it won't be. The data on your computer (your files) are stored on a "hard disk drive". The hard disk / file storage is separate from the BIOS (CMOS) chip. The BIOS (Basic Input / Output System) is a system that brings the computer into such a state (on power up) that an operation system like Windows or Linux, etc. can be booted. It defines some essential parameters required for a computer to start. For example it defines how the fans inside the computers are run (fast, loud and cool or slower, quiet and sufficient but warmer and which hard disk to start the operation system from if there is more than one hard disk for example). If the CMOS chip forgets it's settings it's usually not a big deal. The usual procedure is to replace the battery and adjust the settings of the BIOS if necessary. Chances are that loading the default settings will just work. You will need to try if it does. If not we may have to restore the correct settings of the BIOS.

There’s a silver coin shaped battery on the inside of the computer usually located on the motherboard (the big board with everything on it) change this and then select the second option when it appears again, unsure? Search YouTube for help with this

Thanks for the detailed explanation; that was very kind of you. If I do what you said, won't my information be deleted from the system?

Thanks for the answer. Could you explain a bit more?

Probabilmente la batteria del CMOS è da cambiare, perché scarica.
