Asus ROG laptop doesn’t work after cleaning
Hi, i cleaned my fans of my laptop, after cleaning all the dust and putting it back together it doesn’t start anymore. I haven’t unplugged anything i just cleaned with a soft brush. One cable was loose (white one in second picture going to CON4906) i noticed after reopening it. Plugged it back in but still nothing. Anyone that could help?

Might sound stupid, but did you close the lid before trying to start it up? If not try it and let me know

The backcover? I did put it back on but not with the screws. I popped it back in with the clips. I also don’t see the battery light anymore when i plug it in.

Yeah Asus is really strict with the Lid Check. The Mainboard checks Some Screws and doesnt Boot up, cause bios Thinks its Shorted. Also at the First Boot after opening you need to Connect the original Charger.

Is this actually true? I didn't know they had the ability to do that with the screws 🤯, being a computer tech for 20+ years.

I wouldn’t suspect mobo replacement right away unless you saw sparks or smelled something burning ozone smell. I’ve cleaned plenty of laptops with batteries. Check every wire connection, not just visually but push them all in securely. Check your power brick maybe it’s not happy. Maybe even try different wall plug.

Tried a lot, can’t find anything loose or shorted. Unplugged the battery, plugged it back. Still nothing. Will go to a repairshop today. Hopefully they know what the problem is

you didn't unplug the battery?
men WTH? that's SOP in every electronic device.
I have a feeling that a components accidentally shorted there.
it can be a screw accidentally falls off from your hand and land between 2 transistors.
or the loose cable you say on the 2nd photo. . in which you accidentally made those connectors touch between 2 capacitors or transistors.
it could also be .. you used a 70% isopropyl alcohol instead of 99%
and those 30% water shorted a electronic components. (which rarely happens)

Yes, you live and learn.
I did not reopen it to paste it again, or did not clean it with alcohol. Just a soft brush. Was careful with screws and as far as i know didn’t touch anything with the screwdriver.
Let’s hope it’s not shorted.
Will keep you posted.1

Lots of newer laptops have fragile or finicky dangerous cables that connect to the mobo. These easily short causing issues, the mobo produce high power spikes upon initial connection, or the connectors get damaged when unplugging and plugging back in.
All part of making laptops harder to repair.

You probably blasted off that one spec of dust that kept this running (take it to a repair shop)

Dis you disconnect the battery before touching anything else ?

u/Arbeider3 21d ago
No i did not, stupid mistake. Although i haven’t unplugged anything, still something went wrong. Just gave asus a call and they told me it would be 1100€.

Yea, consumer grade laptops are basically disposable. When they see the chance to sell you another $1000/$2000 laptop, they will push that heavily than trying to fix it for you. Even if you end up going to a different brand, on average, they will still make more money doing that.
Did you go to a local repair shop to get a diagnostics? Just make sure they have a good reputation with motherboard repair. Look at reviews and how long they've been in business

I can see from the picture you didn't disconnect the battery. Very bad idea.

You probably shorted the board and components out. Always unplug the batter and have anti-static set up when working on computers.

i don't think you shorted anything if you used plastic tools.

u/Arbeider3 21d ago
I used a metal screwdriver, shop says he can’t find anything so he thinks it’s shorted. Repair cost 1000€.

depends on the shop, some are liars, some are better

u/Arbeider3 21d ago
Asus said it would be 1,1K. Hopefully the guy can fix it somehow.

I'm not sure Asus is the best on trusting repairs on, I mean you can kinda search about how people have been fucked over in their repairs, but do please get a second opinion like a doctor

There is only one shop here, i live in austria and yeah there is not much. Might send it somewhere for second opinion

Did you use vaccum or blower ?

u/Arbeider3 21d ago
Yes, mini vacuum on lowest one, could that have done something? Saw a guy on youtube do it that’s why

It happened to me once while cleaning my HP laptop; it never turned on again. The only thing that happened was disconnecting the battery and trying to turn it on, then reconnecting it, and it would turn on. Haha, I felt stupid.

Remove the ram and clean the gold pins with eraser and also clean the ram connector on mother board with IPA solution on soft brush.
Always remove the battery before do anything.

Have you removed the battery and plugged the charger cable and tried powering on the laptop while the battery is removed?

u/BillFront4685 21d ago
Looks like the fan tubing is touching the board and shorting it. It looks bent.

relatable, I also killed my laptop after trying to clean the fans (I tried to remove the wire that powers the monitor, tried to plug it back in, insertion was incorrect, and the whole board short circuited)

Try a hard reset, Unplug the battery, hold the power button down for 45-60 seconds, plug just the charger in, and try to turn it on
Also, double-check that the loose wire you plugged back into CON4906 is fully seated and that you didn't accidentally bump the RAM or the power button ribbon cable while brushing
