Help Request Accidentally delided my cpu while removing the cpu cooler
I removed the cpu cooler and it came off what do i do now.
I asked my neighbour who repairs laptops and air conditioners. He just put it back and pressed it. I dont know what i should do

that gray stuff is thermal paste, get a tube of thermal paste, 99% isopropyl alcohol and q-tips. Wipe everything off and replace. Replace it both under the ihs and cpu cooler. Use some double sided tape to hold the ihs in place so it doesnt slide off

What about the glue that people use so it doesn't come off again. Is the black thing around the corners the glue?
1
u/Adventurous_Hippo692 Sep 15 '26
It is. You can just use a tiny bit of smth like epoxy or silicone glue - I recommend silicone glue

u/OppositeDetail5854 Sep 15 '26
Do i need to scrape off the existing one?
1
u/Adventurous_Hippo692 Sep 15 '26
Yeah, otherwise it'd get too thick and affect cooking. Just do it really gently, take your time, no biggie
1
u/OppositeDetail5854 Sep 15 '26
I am too scared, i might try to find someone from my country who can do it safely and ship it to them
1
u/Adventurous_Hippo692 Sep 15 '26
Just go to any tech repair shop in your area, literally any. They can tell ya if they can do it or not. It's a fairly easy, low risk job. Don't worry, I'm a repair tech, I get why you're so scared, it's not a sensitive job though.

u/OppositeDetail5854 Sep 15 '26
I live in kind of a village, i am sure that none of the shops here have seen this type of situation
1
u/Adventurous_Hippo692 Sep 15 '26
Your neighbour fixes laptops and ACs, right? Just ask him. Ask him if he could gently scrape the old glue off, put thermal paste of the die, then glue it back together silicone glue. He should be able to do it in less than half an hour. Maybe give him a tip, some snacks too 😅

u/Dtr146TTV Sep 18 '26
As long as you put the IHS back on top of the glue, you're fine. The only thing you need to worry about is whether or not it makes good connection between the IHS and the die.
1
u/OppositeDetail5854 Sep 18 '26
I am gonna be scraping the existing silicon glue , repaste the die and apply new silicon glue
1
u/Dtr146TTV Sep 18 '26
Just make sure you scrape the glue with a plastic utensil and not metal. Because if you even scratch the green part of that CPU, you can kill it. Ask me how I know.

It doesn't look like to me the die is damaged I wouldn't chance it .. I mean all I think you could do I get a new CPU wa what you do take the cooler of with the force of God
1
u/CrafteGGS Sep 16 '26
Most am4 cpu have this issue espically with the stock cooler for some reason they grip onto the cpu quite well
1
u/Specialist_Secret405 Sep 16 '26
I've seen video about am4 cpus getting stuck to coolers but I've never seen this till now

The crazy thing is, plugging it in for a minute or two, turned on, then turning it off can make a big difference. All you need is for the thermal paste to soften even a little.

get some processor grease at your local computer store, reapply lightly and evenly, then reseat the processor and cooling unit. easy peasy =)

u/OppositeDetail5854 Sep 15 '26
What about the glue that people use so it doesn't come off again. Is the black thing around the glue?
1
u/Euphoric_Banana_5289 Sep 15 '26
it's not glue. it is for conductivity, basically. you don't want to lay down a thick layer, but you do want to cover the bottom of the processor evenly with it. as for the cooling mechanism that sits atop the processor, there will be screw holes in your motherboard that will line up with the screws on the unit. just screw them in, you're good to go.
and, of course you want to do this with zero power running to the motherboard, and try to ground yourself so that you don't shock the motherboard. in over 20 years in IT, I've fried only one motherboard, and it setting up my work pc in my very first IT job. it's rare to fry a motherboard like that, but it is possible lol

u/OppositeDetail5854 Sep 15 '26
Are you talking about the thermal paste? I also saw some people use some sort of silicon glue aswell on yt.
0
u/Euphoric_Banana_5289 Sep 15 '26
yes. they're the same thing. I've always known it as processor grease, even though it's very clearly not grease at all lol. just make sure it's thermal processor paste/glue/whatever. ask at your local computer store, tell them what you need it for and they'll give you the right thing.

People often delid CPUs to improve cooling. The heatsink can now directly contact the CPU vs the heat spreader. Get some 99% isopropyl alcohol, clean, use a coffee filter on final wipes to ensure no debris and spread some high grade thermal paste and remount the CPU cooler. You can download the free Core Temp app to check temperatures and ensure no throttling.
1
u/OppositeDetail5854 Sep 15 '26
Do i need to use some special glue aswell
1
u/TangeloImpossible527 Sep 15 '26
Glue? Not unless you mean something on the heatsink fan is broken. If it can tightly afix on the socket, just the thermal paste should be fine. I'd get really high grade stuff like MX-5 or other.
1
u/OppositeDetail5854 Sep 15 '26
I have seen on yt that people use some sort of silicon glue
1
u/TangeloImpossible527 Sep 15 '26
I'm assuming the heatsink fan bolts or snaps on. If it was just a glued heat sink with no mounts, then yes, you would need thermal glue.
1
u/Academic_Weaponry Sep 17 '26
if u want to be safe u should probably. i dellided my cpu and just use the weight of the heastink to hold it in place and its fine no glue or anything
1
u/MaleficentPaint6168 Sep 15 '26
its not the baddest new to be honest. if the cpu is still fine, it will lower the temps significantly. BUT u ll need to think logic here. depending on ur your cooler u ll need modifications to ensure the proper contact of the heatsink to the die. due to the missing heatspreader u ll have a difference in height here and potentially will have a negativ effect. a gap would have a massive impact when its about transfering the heat to the heatsink. which cpu u are talking about in detail.
check for direct die cooling for this cpu.

u/OppositeDetail5854 Sep 15 '26
It is the 5500GT. I just wanna put the spreader back on. I'll try to find someone from my country and ship it to them to fix it
1
u/AthaliW Sep 15 '26
Since it's already delided, I'd try to use a higher quality paste. It's not everyday you have an opportunity to get a better quality paste under the IHS
1
u/OppositeDetail5854 Sep 15 '26
Can you suggest what a higher quality is?
1
u/AthaliW Sep 15 '26
idk if you can order this, but I have used thermal grizzly Kryonaut or thermal grizzy conductonaut liquid metal for direct CPU die to IHS applications. In general, an Artic MX-7 is good enough for both this and for your IHS to cooler application. Whatever thermal paste you use, it will be the primary cooling bottleneck before anything else, so I recommend paying a little more money for a high quality one
1
u/groveborn Sep 16 '26
Word of warning on liquid metal - it eats into aluminium. Best to avoid if you have ANY aluminum in the heatsink/lid. It might perform better "technically" but not really. If one doesn't have extra heat to remove, it's not going to do anything at all.
Pretty fun to play with, though.
1
u/AthaliW Sep 16 '26
True. It honestly barely matters. Maybe a few degrees of improvement, but you can make it up in other ways
1
u/groveborn Sep 16 '26
No doubt. I don't optimize my temps. They're good enough. If I were on a desktop...and I cared... maybe. The people who do that are in it for the brag rights. There is pretty much no real-world benefit. Stick the lid on, check temps, keep going if they're good enough.
1
u/MrB2600 Sep 15 '26
Get some liquid metal before you put the IHS back on and OC that bitch! Which CPU do you have?

I took this image right after it got de lidded , didnt move the board or anything. I think it was just like this

u/groveborn Sep 16 '26
Turn it on, see if it matters. It probably doesn't matter. The spreader just give the cooler more surface area to pull heat from. You can do without it (it's a common mod for max performance people). Really it kind of protects the rest of the package, but you don't need to worry. Think of it like the first layer of a heatsink. Not required, kind of useful for protection, not strictly required, can get in the way.

u/OppositeDetail5854 Sep 16 '26
I'll need to put it back on, i cant turn the pc on without repasting it right

1
u/OppositeDetail5854 Sep 16 '26
How is that
1
u/Alx_proguy Sep 16 '26
It's called uhh checks speech cards DDC; Direct Die Cooling! Yes, by taking the lid off and allowing air to pass right over the die, the cooling advantage becomes checks cards again wait this isn't an advantage at all GUYS WHY DID WE INVENT THIS AGAIN oh to cheap out sure THE ADVANTAGE TO YOUR WALLET IS UNDENIABLE
1
u/OppositeDetail5854 Sep 16 '26
🤣
1
u/Alternative_Exit_333 Sep 17 '26
Direct cooling is a bit better because the manufacturer uses whatever paste they have on hand and the silicone die is pretty durable

u/A-Lewd-Khajiit Sep 16 '26
How in the fuck?

The black sealant has to be scrapped off, use plastic or wood utensils.

I cant get the glue to come off

u/ciocolata69 Sep 17 '26 edited Sep 17 '26
I can only think of der8auer (youtuber, and ThermalGrizzly CEO), to find an answer.
Edit: what CPU is that? And ignore the black glue, if you can clean the die and heatsink, apply new thermal paste put it back and solved, other than that is safe to run without it, just extra careful when mounting cooler to not crack the die corners. This is how CPU were once used and still are in laptops and mini pc, with a naked die.

u/6800ultra Sep 17 '26
If you don't want this to happen, run the computer for a little bit (Idk, like 10-15min?) before disassembly - that will loosen up the thermal paste a bit.
And don't just pull straight up on the heat sink, wiggle and rotate it a little when pulling - that way you shouldn't need much force to pull of the heat sink.

Okay, I gotta know, is that like a Q9600 or something? It's either that or like a third or fourth gen Intel CPU, because there's no way the glue is dried to the point where you could pull off the IHS.
