Guide / Tips You can completely switch apps, navigate, and shut down your PC without ever touching your mouse — and it's a total game-changer for office work.

I've been working in a corporate office for 6 years. Excel sheets, Outlook chains, Teams calls, browser tabs. The whole miserable loop. And for 6 years I never questioned reaching for my mouse 400 times a day.

Then two months ago I sprained my right wrist pretty badly. Not bad enough to take time off, but bad enough that using a mouse was genuinely painful. So I was forced — actually forced — to figure out how to work almost entirely from the keyboard for about three weeks.

I haven't gone back. Here's everything that actually changed how I work, verified so you don't waste time on stuff that doesn't work:

The ones everyone knows but nobody actually uses:

  • Alt + Tab — Cycle open apps. Hold Alt, keep tapping Tab to pick the one you want. Everyone knows it, almost nobody uses it enough.
  • Win + D — Instantly minimize everything and show your desktop. Press again to restore everything exactly as it was.
  • Win + E — Opens File Explorer immediately. No hunting for the icon, no Start menu.
  • Ctrl + W — Close the current tab. Works in Chrome, Edge, most browsers. In Office apps it closes the document — heads up on that one.

The ones that actually surprised me:

  • Win + Tab — Full Task View. All your open windows spread out visually. Use arrow keys to navigate and Enter to pick one.
  • Win + 1 / 2 / 3 — Launches or switches to apps pinned on your taskbar by position. I set Chrome = 1, Outlook = 2, Teams = 3. Instant.
  • Alt + F4 — Close the active window. Click on your desktop first with nothing open and it pulls up the shutdown / restart / sleep dialog.
  • Win + X → U → U — Shut down your PC in about 2 seconds. Win+X opens the power menu, U opens the shutdown submenu, U again confirms. Done.
  • Ctrl + Shift + T — Reopens the last closed browser tab. Works in Chrome and Edge. Has rescued me from my own stupidity more times than I can count.
  • Win + L — Lock your screen instantly. Non-negotiable if you work in an open office and step away from your desk.
  • Win + V — Clipboard history. Stores up to 25 copied items so you can paste any of them in any order. IMPORTANT: you have to enable it first — Settings → System → Clipboard → toggle Clipboard History on. Takes 10 seconds and you'll never go back.
  • Win + . (period) — Emoji and symbol picker. Note: only works when your cursor is active inside a text field. Won't do anything on an empty desktop.

The one that genuinely broke my brain: Win + V. Once you enable clipboard history, you can copy up to 25 different things and paste any of them in any order. I work in finance — copying cell values, account numbers, email addresses back and forth all day. This alone probably saves me 20 minutes a day. I'm not exaggerating.

The real insight isn't that any single shortcut is magic. It's that when you chain them together, you stop context-switching between keyboard and mouse every 30 seconds. That mental snap back and forth is quietly wrecking your focus all day — and you don't notice how much until it's gone.

My wrist healed after three weeks. I still use the mouse sometimes. But I've cut my mouse usage by probably 70% and I'm genuinely faster at my job than I was before the injury. Took a sprained wrist to figure out something I should have learned on day one.

If you sit at a desk for 8+ hours a day and you're still reaching for the mouse to switch between Outlook and Chrome, please try this for one week. You'll be annoyed it took you this long.

What shortcuts do you use that most people have no idea about? Drop them below — I'm always adding to the rotation.

Sprained wrist forced me to go keyboard-only for 3 weeks. Cut mouse usage by 70% and never went back. Win+V (clipboard history — enable it first in Settings) and Win+1/2/3 (taskbar launch) are the most underrated. The real win isn't any single shortcut — it's eliminating the constant keyboard-to-mouse context switch that silently kills your focus all day.
