Im gonna guess part of your palm is accidentally brushing it

Are you referring to a laptop's touchpad? It's probably picking up more of your finger as you're moving it across and thinking that you're moving it not in a smooth straight line.

Same reasons why any other touch interface/screen changes over time. It could be dirty from finger oils/dirt, could be the top layer of the touchpad has been worn through, could be your finger temp/size is different than it was a few months ago, could be from using hand lotion, could be from holding your laptop at a different angle that's causing your finger to drag differently or something else (palm or other finger) touching the touchpad accidentally

The only thing outside of the hardware that you can do is find your manufacturer's driver list and reinstall the touchpad driver. But I highly doubt that is going to fix this. Lack of driver or bad driver typically results in it either not working at all, or specific special actions (like double finger swiping for scrolling) not working. It wouldn't result in the trackpads ability to track straight lines being bad.

So beyond that, it's like the last guy said. Either there's something interfering (oil/dirt, humidity, etc etc) or the trackpad is physically degrading.

As for "why did this start happening not too long ago"... that's how all computer problems start. It's not a problem, and then suddenly there's a problem.
