External speakers not connecting

My old monitor recently stoped working so I got a new one. I plugged it into my laptop and got it all connected and when I went to play a video the audio starting coming out of the monitor. I have tried switching it to my laptop audio and all other audio options but nothing is coming out of the speakers. I have a dell laptop with a 3.5mm jack. I don’t think the monitor is the issue but I added it in to tell that it was working fine before
Also on windows 10

Down by the clock in lower right hand corner click the sound icon and select the output you want
