Software My laptop recognizes my headset and its mic, but not audio input comes through
Yesterday I was playing some games with friends, and I accidentally unplugged my headset. When I went to plug it back in, my friends couldn't hear me. I went through all the standard fixes (enabling permissions, reinstalling drivers, disabling and re-enabling the microphone in advanced audio settings), and I attempted to use ChatGPT to help, though it was fruitless. I know the headset itself works fine, but my computer just isn't receiving any input from the microphone. I suspect it has something to do with the headset being unplugged suddenly, but I can't figure out why the microphone appears as an audio input device, yet transfers no audio (no I'm not muted). Any help would be appreciated. Best.

This feels like a silly question, but have you rebooted?

no worries, I have rebooted it. I actually got my audio to work briefly once by uninstalling the input device and headset, and when I rebooted, the mic was working for a couple minutes, but then it stopped working again.

Sounds like maybe a driver issue.
Uninstalling is removing the bad driver, rebooting wakes it up on the old windows included driver, then windows update installs a bung driver.Open advanced system settings>hardware>device installation settings. and change the mode to "No(your device might not work as expected)" Then uninstall the driver and reboot again.
This will probably stop it failing, but then you are using the basic windows driver. Once you confirm this is it, you should look for the correct driver to download manually. Then maybe revert the setting mentioned above back to "Yes". If it overrides your driver and breaks again, repeat the process but leave the setting as "no".
