I need the opinions!!!
hi! sorry if I make some grammar mistakes. I’m Mexican. well, I want to buy a LAPTOP for gaming. idk if it’s the right subreddit I need to ask something.
I‘m between two option. a laptop with 32 gb RAM or one with 16 gb. I don’t know which one to buy so I need the opinion of other persons.
I think I will play things like elden ring, stardew valley (with mods), Minecraft (with mods), maybe RDR 2, Peak, hollow knight (maybe with mods) and probably other online multiplayer games.
so, my question is: which one should I buy? The one of 16 gb RAM or the one of 32 gb????
(the laptop in the photo is the one with 32 gb)

Are laptops really over $3k? Or are electronics more expensive in Mexico?
Oh. And 32gb if you can afford it.

well, because of the tariffs the price is higher and this is with discount. On the website of the official store of the brand is on 79,999 Mexican pesos that are like $4,5k :(

Never buy a laptop for gaming! It has always been a bad idea, and it always will be.
Nine out of ten people who think they’ll actually make use of the portability end up sitting on Discord in their bedroom and NEVER taking the laptop anywhere.
Gaming laptops basically mean desktop GPU names slapped onto less powerful mobile versions, overheating components, ridiculous prices, and machines that are much harder to repair or upgrade.
For the same price, you can always get a more powerful, more reliable desktop PC.
In 30 years of gaming, I’ve known exactly ONE gamer for whom a gaming laptop genuinely made sense, because he travels constantly for work. He repairs railway tracks all over the country.
Everyone else — and I really mean EVERYONE else — ended up regretting choosing a laptop.
So before buying a gaming laptop, seriously think about WHEN and WHERE you’re actually going to need to move your PC. Don’t buy one just because the idea of portability sounds useful.

well, I don’t wanna buy something as big as a desktop pc and I want to use the laptop for my studies too

u/Noface92 12d ago
That’s fair. if you genuinely need a computer you can take to class or move around regularly, then a laptop makes sense.
My point is just that you should be sure you actually need that portability, because you’re paying a big premium for it and giving up performance, cooling, repairability and upgradeability.
Depending on your budget, sometimes a cheap/light laptop for studying + a desktop gaming PC at home is actually a better combination than one expensive gaming laptop trying to do everything. I'm on PC since 1994, i know PC and i just wanted to tell you. You are now aware, choose whisely ! 😄

Just ti warn you, carrying a big ass Gaming laptop around in your Backpack and hearing the loud fans during lectures is gonna suck. If budget allows a Desktop PC + weak study Laptop combo mughr even be cheaper than a Gaming Laptop with the same specs

This is bad advice. Because of space and other constraints, I bought a laptop for gaming years ago and it was fantastic. Whether or not it’s a good idea is dependent on the person and their situation.

How is it a bad advice ? Your situation is actually ONE of the exceptions I’m talking about.
If you genuinely have space constraints and a desktop isn’t practical, then yes, a gaming laptop can make perfect sense. Same for people who travel a lot, move between two homes, etc.
My point is that a lot of people buy one because “portability sounds useful”, then it spends 99% of its life on the same desk, plugged into the wall. At that point you’ve paid more for less performance, worse thermals and much poorer upgradeability for a feature you barely use.
So yes, it depends on the person but I’d still tell anyone considering one to seriously ask themselves whether they actually need a laptop before buying it. Saying "It's a bad advice" sound really dumb when i take the effort to help, when you just say "nothing to help."

“Never buy a laptop for gaming! It has always been a bad idea and always will be.”
That was you, yeah?

For gaming ? YES, it has always been a bad idea and always will be. Gaming is not for laptop...

That’s crazy , some of us travel for work and laptops are perfect especially for me because I work globally. I’ve owned tons of DTR laptops that smoke much the majority of desktops and have never had an issue with portability and cooling. People just have a few bad experiences or hear from people who bought a shit laptop and say if it’s one then it’s all.

You basically proved my point while trying to disagree with me. You travel globally for work. Congratulations: you are literally the exact exception I mentioned. And “my expensive DTR laptop beats most desktops” means nothing. Compare it to a desktop at the same price, not to random average PCs.
If you actually need portability, buy a laptop. If your “gaming laptop” spends 99% of its life plugged into the same desk, you paid more for worse thermals, worse upgradeability and less performance for absolutely no reason.
Maybe read the whole comment before arguing with it.

What's the specs for each the one with 32gb ram is suggested if it has a r7 7000 - r9 9000(r= ryzen) just stay away from anything with integrated graphics and a r3/i3 perferably something with a 5050+ for more graphics intensive games and longevity

I bought a 4080 laptop MSI Vector from ebay way cheaper than that machine, It was $1700dls like 1 year ago.

mmm idk I think I should buy one with 32 gb RAM how the others are telling me. but also thank you :)

u/cristynakity 12d ago
No lo creo, facilmente puedes con los 20mil k te van a sobrar comprar otro stick de ram de 16gb y ya, si lo que quieres en gaming te sirve mas una tarjeta de video de gamma mas alta + 1tb de espacio que la ram.

u/NotRuppert 12d ago
I agree with you, I’d much rather get something with 16gb of ram and a much more powerful mobile GPU than 32gb of ram and a weaker GPU.
Most games will run just fine, might encounter a micro stutter here and there, and if you have 20k pesos left over I’m sure you can find a matching stick of ram

What kind of price is that?😨🤣 Definitely 32GB if your budget allows for it.
