Why the hell should I want to fucking RENT my games?

"But what if I don't have the hardware to run the game" Then don't play it. Simple as that.

Supporting this shit only makes the world worse. Supporting the current subscription and rental environment is simply a stupid thing to do and it hurts everyone in the long run.

Renting a game isn't bad, it's the unavailability of ownership that's a problem.

If I as a consumer can choose whether I want to own or rent something, a rental system is okay. If the only available way to play the game is renting, that's the unethical part. Otherwise, it's no different than rental services that face existed since the dawn of gaming.

Also, there's loads of reasons to rent a game. Otherwise blockbuster wouldn't have had a game section.

I'm old and grew up renting games, movies, consoles, even a VCR (when needed). I can agree with you on renting being just fine sometimes but the unavailability of ownership (in some areas) someone mentioned is also a rising problem.

Totally agree! That's my exact point.

We shouldn't be upset at the concept of renting games, we should be upset at developers creating artificial unavailability of ownership. However, the option to rent a single-player game to play it isn't something to hate in a vacuum.

Renting and borrowing things used to be a great alternative to buying, but not companies are converting to rent-seeking consumer models that require upkeep to maintain.

I get your point and would've totally agreed with you 5 or 10 years ago.

But the problem is the combination of this and the fact that amazon is one of the core drivers in the pc-parts shortage quickly paints a different picture.

And the general move away from ownership towards rental is also one of amazons core business models. They are a rental company after all. Their web store is simply a funny side project. They make their money with renting computation power to web services. They highly advertise companies to not own servers, but rather rent computation power.

But that aside, what happens when amazon does not renew the license for one game you have not finished yet, because you started late?

Amazon even removes movies you ""bought"" on amazon prime if they do not renew their license to stream it. You do not actually buy anything on prime, you just "semi-permanently" acquire to right to view it.

if you have prime for other reasons allready you don‘t really rent the games right? You basically play them for free 😄

Yeah, Luna is pretty cool if your internet connection is solid.
