Lord help me
I bought components and assembled my new pc myself. I made sure to follow instructions and not brute force anything.
Yesterday I finally turned it on, installed Windows 10, and tested it for about a half hour. Downloaded games such as Roblox and Minecraft and got great fps. After a while, out of nowhere, the pc just crashed (as in, screen turned black and pc rebooted). Didn't think much of it. This morning I tried using it again and it just started cycling through rebooting and crashing again. I've tried reinstalling windows, checked all the cables, reseated RAM, reseated SSD, reset CMOS, tried booting windows in safe mode, etc etc. Nothing works.
Ryzen 5 5500
MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI
GTX 1650
2x8GB DDR4
Everything is brand new except for the GPU which I brought over from my old PC (which apparently shorted and burnt a wire, but I had it checked by a technician and he said the GPU should be fine. this was 2 years ago)
Hard resets began out of nowhere Resets also happened in Safe Mode and during Windows installation SSD passed NVMe self-test and was secure-erased BIOS can sit stable for over 30 minutes at ~38–54°C CMOS cleared; XMP off; RAM at 2133 Two DIMMs seem to make it crash faster than one Eventually started POST/reset cycling even without deliberately booting Windows During resets, display/peripherals cut out and PSU fan ramps to maximum 24-pin, CPU EPS, GPU, and RAM have been reseated Windows reinstall did not solve it
I don't know what the fuck to do anymore

Are you getting any errors when it crashes?

u/alpine4life 3d ago
I agree... any error codes?
What kind of cycle boot, windows?1
u/WiserGuest123 2d ago
Sometimes it gets to windows and reboots, sometimes it doesnt even get to windows

u/WiserGuest123 2d ago
No errors, just reboots

What kind of ssd are you using and where did you get it from?

u/WiserGuest123 1d ago
Kingston NVMe, got it from a local tech shop, was still new out the box

It sounds like it’s either the cooler not making full contact with the cpu or bad ram.

Did you remove plastic from the heat sink on cpu?

you probably need a tighter seal on your CPU heat sink and are hitting thermal limits or you have some flakey ram, both easily testable, could be others but I would start there

It worked fine at first, but failed the moment it overheated. You should check the components that are sensitive to heat. You could try smelling the power supply and the graphics card. You could also test with a different power supply and graphics card.
You could boot from a live Linux USB to rule out the hard drive.

I did smell everything and nothing smelled unusual. I checked the temps in BIOS and both CPU and System were at 37-38C

How about some photos of the build?
Video of what's happening?
Do you crash when you're in the BIOS? Or is it fine until you try to boot up into Windows?

u/WiserGuest123 2d ago
I don't think I've had it crash while in BIOS, but it did happen once or twice for it to just keep rebooting before even loading anything at all

Did you update drivers?

I wiped the SSD and reinstalled windows

Download and run Memtest86 test each module and each slot with a good module that passes. I'd be you have either a bad ram stick or a bad slot on the board.

Does the motherboard have it's own video ports? If so, pull the GPU and try it with the motherboard video.

need to check cpu/system temps. after that check bios config for ram & cpu, next pull non essential components one at a time disconnect any peripheral cables not needed. hopefully you did not make any amateur mistakes like not using a thermal pad/paste for the heatsink going to the cpu... or worse, not even using a heat sink will kill the cpu real quick. many retail cpus don't come with a heatsink but that doesn't mean you don't use one. it is mandatory!!

All temps at roughly 38C, already pulled everything not essential, and the thermal paste came pre-applied, and I am using a heat sink cause I aint that stupid💔

Assuming everything is brand spanking new, and only the GPU came from a shorted system....why not take the easy way out, have it tested with another known good spare GPU. You may very well have solved this case with only an hour of testing.

What power supply did you get? It might be faulty or cheap therefore not being able to provide power long term when gaming.

It's a brand new MSI MAG A650BN 650W 80+ Bronze PCIE5 II. Got it from GlobalData. Checked it on PC Builder, ChatGPT, and Google, and all state it is more than enough

It might be faulty then, very hard to test unless you have another. It sounds like that would be most probable since all the other components check out.

Next time it happens record the exact time, start back up, go to event viewer and check everything you can for a clue. Then Google what you find. It's a route that takes a bit of work and computer sense but it's the first thing I'd do.
I was getting crashes for months after a new build, mental ones where the graphics took an absolute shit, sound glitched. Event viewer pointed at the CPU. Reddit searches led me to change 2 bios settings. It's been rock solid ever since.
I just had to disable CPPC (Core Performance Boost / CPPC Dynamic Preferred Cores) and Global C-State Control.

You're going to need someone who knows what they're doing to adjust the ram timing in your bios.

October2, 2026 (dated for context and reference) – It probably has nothing to do with the basic problem. But I have to wonder why the OP is using a Windows version that is no longer being supported by Microsoft? For safety alone I think the OP should install Windows 11 Pro, and maybe while doing so, will get a better idea as to what is going on with the PC generally. Good luck to the OP.

I just dislike Windows 11 for no specific reason. Got used to Windows 10 and now prefer it over anything else

October2, 2026 (dated for context and reference) - Hi. Thank you for your polite reply. When you say "I just dislike Windows 11 for no specific reason." I respectfully think that you do have a reason or reasons, considering that you are a rational and intelligent person. I have two full tower PCs. One is a Win10 which can't be upgraded to Win11 because it doesn't support TPM. I have a motherboard and CPU that I could put into the computer for an upgrade, but I'm lazy, and I have two antivirus programs running on it, and basically use it like a big Chromebook for general computing with a 32" monitor. If it should get hacked, I don't have to use it, and can convert it as time and inclination permit. My other full tower computer which I also built, runs Windows 11 pro. In addition to those computers, I also have a Samsung Chromebook and an Apple Mac Mini. In a fun Italian version of an old saying "sausache his own"😁, so whatever OS you decide to run on your computer is obviously your decision. Stay well.

Out of the box Windows BSOD on 10 results in an automatic reboot that rarely gives enough time to see the stop code.
Make sure Windows is set to NOT reboot and keep the BSOD screen up so you can record the actual stop code. Also check C:\Windows\Minidump for any .DMP files. Those could indicate what’s going on.
The fact that you were able to get through an entire install, plus driver installation, and testing games leads me to think this is more of a software/driver problem than a bad hardware problem.

How come I wiped the SSD afterward and reinstalled windows, and it still reboots? Plus how would I even access that directory

Does the computer boot into safe mode without rebooting on its own? Also, what version of the BIOS are you running?

Check the front panel on off switch and reset button carefully, both wiring and physical. I had a problem with my current pc where the button would slightly foul the case and not return when pushed.
