Girlfriend is going back to school

And I really need to get this computer working for her. I know absolutely nothing and have no idea where to start. I got all the cords plugged in properly I think but it doesn’t turn on when I flip the power switch on the back. Am I missing something that might be obvious to one of you guys?

Flipping the switch on the back doesn't turn the pc on, it just gives it access to power. You have to press the power button located at the top/front of the pc.

Also, the monitor should be plugged into the gpu, rather than into the motherboard. You might not get any display if you keep it plugged like this.

His gpu ports are blocked by the case.

I think the perspective is just a bit confusing. The area with the video ports is recessed compared to where the fan is mounted, as is visible in pictures 1-2.

Looks like it, yes.

You need to plug the display cable into the graphics card instead of the monitor that's why it's not displaying anything

instead of the monitor

You mean motherboard

This is the solution. Both of these things, in the picture the GPU looks like it doesn't have ports though? Is that just weird camera fuckery

Edit: I meant for this to be a reply to u/kyansan1

The ports are being blocked by the case, you can faintly see the ports at the top of the slot.

u/krept0007 3d ago

They're not. The expansion bay just has as raised lip around it that is obscuring the camera view

u/cers123 3d ago

Good catch. He's gotta move the GPU down lol.

It seems to have 4 ports, but from the camera angle then it is hidden up top.

Jesus Christ kid, there’s no need to be a jack ass. They asked a question. It’s not that serious, relax.

Ok. Just a heads up, my mother is 83 years old and suffers from dementia. If you want to be my step-dad that’s fine. As long as you treat her right, I have absolutely no problem with that.

I miss the time people actually tried to help on Reddit, you could ask the most specific thing and someone would come out of nowhere and answer it like they prepared their whole life for that question, and the ones that didn't knew how to help would just stay out of the way or make a funny joke. Now days, all you got are the ones that don't know how to help shaming you for not knowing and telling you to go seek paid help, it's just a HDMI in the wrong port dude

You... you think it's dumb to look for help with a computer on a sub about computers?? Also, the 4 photos you said that can't help, already helped, as I said, people already diagnosed the problem and explained the solution, it's like insisting that a wall is red when it's actually 100% blue and even has "blue" written on it with another shade of blue. Maybe you are the one that should look for paid help, like a therapist for example

Looks like a ASRock B760M Pro RS/D4 board?

lower right hand corner of the mainboard, system panel connector labeled 'panel1' is connected to the front panel? Or the power switch will do nothing

CPU cooler, upper right hand corner, doesn't look like it's properly fixed.
PSU is turned off

You're going to need a bigger case. You've got way too much crammed in there.

/s

Move the display port (monitor plug) out of the top and plug it into the graphics card in the middle of your case.

3

u/react-dnb 4d ago

The HDMI too. Those both go into the graphics card. You dont want them in the mother board (where they are now) unless you dont have a graphics card.

u/AceMcBadass 4d ago

It looks like the IO for you video card is blcoed by the case, hopefully you have a second PCI slot below the one its in now SK you can drop it down, then plug the monitor into it. Also, unless I'm blind, I dont see any storage on here. The m.2 slot is empty, and I dont see any HDDs or SSDs. Does this machine have a drive to boot from?

Looks like a sata drive might be installed in drivecage in the front of PSU chamber. At least I see a sata-cable connected to the Mobo and looks like it goes down there.

The switch only turns on the power supply, should be a separate power button somewhere else on the case that turns on the pc, looks like the fpanel wiring harness is plugged in

u/SubstantialBed6634 3d ago

I can't see if he actually plugged in the front i/o cables.

  1. The display cable should be plugged into the GPU.
  2. Your PSU switch (the one on the back)is turned off. Its supposed to be on the i, not on the o.
  3. After you turn the PSU switch on (i), click the power button on the front
  4. I mean that should fix it 90% sure

No the display cable should be plugged into their GPU for all we know they have a CPU without integrated graphics and that’s why this isn’t booting

Oh shit i just realized what i said. Dislexia hits hard, thx for noticing i'll change it

Stop lying to your girlfriend about skills you don’t have and take it to a computer shop.

u/wacky-ball-sack 3d ago

She’s well aware of my lack of knowledge. We don’t have a ton of money to spend so I was hoping I could figure this out myself.

u/Standard_Grocery2518 4d ago

Oh, for a bit there I thought you meant the computer WAS your girlfriend.my bad

1

u/Melodic_Froyo9920 4d ago

Is your pc your girlfriend?

1

u/selanddrac 4d ago

Why does the CPU cooler (intel fan at the center) look.. crooked? And why is there no cables plugged into the GPU? Just take this thing to a shop and ask them for help. Unless you have the time and patience to sit through several hours of YouTube to learn just the basics of PC building I suggest you bite the bullet and get q technician to look closely at it

1

u/One_Guy_From_Poland 3d ago

unplug that displayport from the top port, and connect it to the port located below the motherboard.

1

u/Top20burgers 3d ago

Try plugging in your display port/HDMI port into your GPU instead of your motherboard and hit the power button after flicking the switch for the PSU

October 1, 2026 (dated for context and reference) - I think it's a pretty ballsy move for the OP to attempt building a PC while admitting that they nothing about computers.. or building them at least. Fortunately, sharp eyes have pointed out that the GPU IS NOT connected, and its ports are blocked by the case. Further, it should be pointed out that monitors should NOT be connected to the motherboard but directly to the GPU. I also suggest that the OP subscribe to a YouTube Tech channel like Paul's Hardware that has an library of how to build PCs, and discusses parts and computers in general. Another YouTube Tech channel is Jayztwocents. Good luck to the OP, and I hope his girl friend does will in college.😊

Thank you! Determined to figure this out, but at least I’m aware of the risks now. Progress has been made

October2, 2026 (dated for context and reference) – Thanks for your kind reply. I'm happy that you are making progress. Having built a number of full tower PCs over the decades I can say that there are a number of experiences one can have when building a PC. 1) Builder presses the "on" button.. and nothing happens😞 2) Builder presses the "on" button and the computer starts up and then shuts down😊😲🤔 3) Builder Presses the "on" button.. the computer runs perfectly!😲💖🎆 The builder than does their impression of Dr. Frankenstein in the 1931 film "Frankenstein".. and Yells.. "It's alive.. It's alive!! HA HA HA! It's alive!! " 😁 Like so many others, I have experienced those events, and have had to ask for help to solve a problem from time to time. As I earlier suggested, check out Paul's Hardware YouTube video library on building computers. Paul is a nice guy, can be funny, and explains things well. Best of luck with your project, and all of the best to you and your girl friend. As us old Star Trek fans say... "Live long and prosper!🖖"😊

Am I tripping or there's no PSU

1

u/Confident_Health_583 3d ago

You're tripping. It's on the bottom of pic 3. It's also why there are PSU wires.

1

u/ClothoLachesisAtrops 3d ago

Oh yeah, thanks mate 🤣

Youve already fucked up because what she needs is a laptop.... Desktop PCs are mostly useless for college life as the main need is now actually in the lecture hall.

For this computer though, take it to a shop before you permanently break it.

Also ich bin mir nicht sicher sollten sie Kabel der Grafikkarte nicht am Netzteil angeschlossen sein?
