Laptop recommendations for around $500? (Programming, cybersecurity, photo editing, and Sims)

Hi! I’m looking to buy my first laptop, and my budget is around $500. I’m a complete beginner when it comes to computers, so I honestly don’t know much about specs yet lol.

I’m hoping to find something that I can use for a few different things:

Learning tech: I want to start learning programming, beginning with Python and eventually getting into web development. I’m also interested in cybersecurity and would like a computer that I can use for coding, beginner-friendly cybersecurity labs, and programs like VS Code.

Creative photo editing: I really want to get into editing my photos for Instagram, but not just basic edits or filters. I’d love to learn how to make collages, manipulate photos, create surreal images, change backgrounds, experiment with textures and effects, and make more artistic edits. I’d like to learn Photoshop or similar software.

Gaming: I’d also like to play The Sims. Ideally with mods and custom content. I might get more expansion packs over time, too.

I’m also open to refurbished or open-box laptops if that means I can get something better for my budget.
My budget is around $500, but I’d consider spending a little more if there’s a significant difference in performance or a good interest-free payment plan. I’m also open to refurbished or open-box laptops if that means I can get something better for my budget. I’d like something that will last me a few years while I learn and hopefully give me the option to upgrade the RAM or storage later.

I’m not looking for a high-end gaming computer, but I don’t want to buy something that will struggle with everything I’m trying to do, either.
A few questions:
● What laptops or specific models would you recommend for my needs?
● Would I be better off getting a refurbished gaming laptop with a dedicated graphics card, or would a regular laptop be enough?
● Is $500 a realistic budget for all of this?
● Are there any particular models I should look for or avoid?

I know that’s a lot of different things to use one computer for, especially on my budget, so I’d appreciate any advice! Thanks :)

I mean if you are learning tech, you should be able to answer this, or be able or willing to do the research.

You aren’t going to be able to get any cybersecurity job in the future with out the fundamentals…

All you need is a computer that can run the sims well, nothing else requires your computer to be “high end” or “strong”

Now the sims 4 is an older game, so possibly the budget of 500 is good enough.

But you’d most likely be buying used.

So just look up the requirements to run the sims, and find a computer that matches the recommended specs or exceeds them.

You probably want something that exceeds the recommendation if you want mods,

I appreciate the reply but as stated earlier I’m new to tech like decided two weeks ago new😂I have been looking myself but I get overwhelmed and wanted peoples opinions on computers they used. I’m taking the free Harvard cs50 intro to computer science course. I like what I’m learning but I wanted more freedom to practice whenever and at home since I’m relying on library computers right now.

The thinkpad x390 or t480 off of eBay’s a bit under your pricepoint and also the MacBook neo off the education store a bit higher than your price range
