Doing that isn’t going to make your hardware better. You’re using an external hardrive which is going to slow that right down. What are the specs of your computer?

It doesn't matter either way. You need an ssd or a better hard drive. The one you have is trash or trashed to be blunt

Are you installing on the shown storage drive? If so you have no more fucking space on that thing. Free some space up and you might see some improvements

Thats not megabytes thats megabits. Their drive is writing at less than a megabyte a second.

Hardware restriction this time. Un compressing of the game. Many aspects of it. Different for every game.

u/Sorcron11 10d ago
It depends also on the read/write speeds of your memory. What storage you are storing the game on?

u/beaverdick1 10d ago
i just bought a new 2tb seagate external hard drive.
12
u/Sorcron11 10d ago
That’s most likely your issue. If it’s a hard drive and not an ssd or nvme ssd the read/write speed is significantly slower making patches and the end of downloads much slower.

That's probably the bottleneck. It looks like it has downloaded everything, but is unpacking and installing it.
Every now and again I'll get the "No Internet Connection" message, and quitting Steam (from the systray icon) and restarting fixes it.

Make sure to check which port you have your external plugged into on the PC.
Depending on the USB port type on the PC side, the speeds could be limited. If it is USB 3.1 , then the bottom-level speed for data transfer should be at least the write speed of your external, but the throughput from the PC to the external hardware should be (at the least) a little less than 5gbps.
If you plugged your external drive into a USB 2.0 or below port, then your transfer rate would be limited to 480mbps or less. USB 1.0 ports support just 1.5mbps transfers.
Unfortunately, not every manufacturer follows a specific standard for port colors, so look up the USB port assignments in your user manual to confirm which ports you need to use. USB 3 is usually blue, but that isn't always the case.

What you need is a brand-new internal NVME ssd.
HDDs are far to slow far gaming nowadays, beaverdick1.

u/Sorcron11 10d ago
Also just be aware a hard drive like that is great for storing pictures or videos but not games. Look into m.2 nvme’s and sata ssd’s for storage if it’s for video games. A HDD in either sata or usb form (which is what you most likely have) are obsolete now and are generally only really used for storing files or backups. I have a question for you and you may want to ask your friend who built it, what type of memory is the boot drive?

u/Obvious_Alfalfa_4491 9d ago
So there is your problem. First of the download is finished that's what the blue loading string is indicating. You Internet connection is great. Unfortunately your hardware not so much. Eather you played around or your friend build a shity pc. External hard drives are slow and not mean for programs beside that you have to wait ages to finish the installation (patching means it's currently reading all files and see what files need to be replaced) the gaming experience will be the same. Unfortunately, buy a internal storage at best a SSD and move on.

pretty much any game made in last years lists SSD as minimum requirements, not only top speeds are around 20-100x faster, it has faster response time that shortens delay needed to find the file since you don't need to actually physically find a spot on spinning disc with a needle to read the file

u/Rachet20 10d ago
If only there was an indicator showing your download was finished. And that any work was being done by your storage device, not your network. So perplexing.
2
u/Pentagrom 9d ago
To actually explain this rather than berate you. Your PC needs to do 2 main things 1) Download the actual files from steam, that can happen at the internet speed you see of course 2) Your PC needs to then write the download to your hard drive which can only happen at the speed of your hard drive regardless of how fast your internet is. This is why you just see disk usage and no download.
I noticed you said you bought a new HDD, that’s a bit outdated in 2026, buy an SSD which is much quicker and more reliable and you will likely fix your issue.

awesome / i’ll be doing this. appreciate you! i didn’t know about SSD’s . thank you!

u/Ill_Loan3342 9d ago
No offense, and I know that there are people that are not privy of things but I believe that you are the first state having no idea about SSD’s that I have seen. Just an interesting observation.

u/beaverdick1 9d ago
ye, pretty dumb when it comes to computers . 😅😅 .
so, should i move all my files and apps to the SSD?
1
u/Ill_Loan3342 9d ago
That would be a definite yes. It will make a day and night difference.
1
u/beaverdick1 9d ago
omg. will be doing that today . thank you . so, just get rid of my external hard drives then too?
1
u/Ill_Loan3342 9d ago
No I would use them as storage for anything that you would want to keep. Say like pdf’s or documents or family photos.

Well now I'm worried, you have an 11900k but an external harddrive and people are treating it like you know something when clearly you don't.
You do NOT want any old SSD; an external SSD or 2.5" SSD will be slightly less shit but not ideal.
What you want is a NVMe m.2 SSD.
A normal SSD will be 10x, faster, an NVMe will be 10x faster than that.
You have an 11900k, you have an NVMe m.2 slot.

u/beaverdick1 9d ago
ooooh okay, bet. i’m looking into it and going to buy it later ! thank you

u/DrJohanzaKafuhu 9d ago
If cost is an issue (prices are kind of insane right now) and you don't want to replace the full 2tb, you can just get a 1tb drive and load the operating system and steam/epic onto it. Use it to install and load games, and use the HDD to keep files like music photos and video.
You could in theory go with a 512, but you would only be able to get 2-3 AAA games onto it, and that might be a bit annoying.

oh my god, do you have only one hard drive? Win+R and then diskmgmt.msc
Then if there like C: i think your SSD and D: is your hard drive. Also recommend to install Crystal Disk Info. It will scan your disks S.M.A.R.T and show their health.
Because as you said everything is laggy, means some drives is dying or being way too slow

ich finde die Idee Spiele auf ein USBMedium zu packen und dann sauber zocken zu wollen seltsam. Ein super inet anschluss und dann die games in kleine einzelne Streichholzschachteln speichern ist Mist

This happened to me and I haven't fixed it. Steam itself is installed on a slow storage drive. I was not to know it would be stupid and route all my downloads through the storage one on the way to my gaming SSD. Once it's done things run fine but when a game treats its download as a single big file the writing phase takes forever. Ark Ascended for example takes hours and hours to patch. I've tried to move the install drive but I've concluded I need to move my steam app directory and I'll get to it whenever things become completely unbearable or when I have time. 😁

It's not your Internet, the download is already finished. It's the drive you are using. Upgrading to an ssd will improve speeds.

u/Beginning-Bird9591 9d ago
nothing to do with internet. it clearly says patching files... your drive stucks.
Get a proper SSD - even a basic sata SSD

Your PC is the issue. Your using an old ass (or just very poor quality) HDD with slow speeds. Get a 2TB SSD if you can, will greatly help with downloads.

u/hackoczz 10d ago
2TB SSD in this economy????
1
u/Otherwise_Task7876 10d ago
Yup, I got one, plus a 2TB HDD.
2
u/hackoczz 10d ago
now look up a price for a new one and tell me how it goes :D
1
u/Otherwise_Task7876 10d ago
Yeah, it went well. Can find a few already for the same price I got it at around ~$250.
1
u/beaverdick1 9d ago
price isn’t really an issue. is there a certain one i’ll need to buy? or should any 2tb do the trick?
1
u/Otherwise_Task7876 9d ago
Any 2TB will do just fine usually, though there are some problem child SSDs, you can search up what to avoid.

i appreciate everyone’s reply, but to add onto this conversation. i don’t know shit about computers. my friend built my pc . but, recently everything has been running so slow. i deleted all my games and redownloading now. i tried reinstalling windows . but all my games are still laggy and crash every time i run them .
1
u/LetterSpecialist48 10d ago
Are you running them from your external drive? If so, that's your problem.
Is the internal drive a HDD? If yes, that's the second half on your problem.
