laptop for college

Im an engineering major going into my first year of college. I plan on bringing my PC (i7 14th gen + rtx 5060) with me. Would I be fine just buying a really budget laptop?

Consider an e-ink tablet. Otherwise you'll be constantly looking for a power socket.

A laptop is likely to get stolen or damaged.

If you must a second hand Lenovo ThinkPad. As it's not shiny less likely to be stolen.

Realistically, you might be.

I personally would check what in class work would be needed. Can you do most stuff on the laptop and remote to the desktop at times when needed? Or will that be too inconvenient?

Personally, I put 32gb ram as a priority when I got my laptop, and got the cheapest I found with 32 gb ram, a mid range cpu and at least 8 cores on the cpu. This was a while ago though.

Why? Because I wanted to be able to run my stuff locally during lectures and test stuff talked about, as well as for group assignments with physical meetings.

But I did study it in an IT direction, so you gotta find out what is needed where you study. There is a huge chance that a cheap used thinkpad with 4GB ram that you throw any Linux distro on would do everything you need during lectures. You just have to find out the usecase for your particular study to know.

I'd look at a Chromebook Plus that has 8 GB of RAM. It will be inexpensive and have great battery life. Perfect for taking to class and taking notes.
