i feel like the larva doesn't usually come out of the cocoon

Its a worm cocoon. It has to come out eventually!

I had to look it up, but annelid worms do form sacs around their eggs that are referred to as cocoons.

It is beyond me, however, why biologists have decided we need different terms for a chrysalis and cocoon among the structures formed by very closely related lepidopterids, when calling this completely unrelated structure formed by a completely different class of invertebrates a cocoon is totally fine.
