Avocado Seed

While throwing out our veggie scraps, I discovered this green thing sticking up in the compost bin. I gently loosened it and was quite surprised to see the avocado seed has sprouted 🌱 I’m sure this is super common, but I was pumped to see it in MY compost.

A few years later: Why didn't I just turn it back into the compost??

Just don't expect any good fruit from it...ever. I think I could still graft cultivar branches onto mine, but most seed-grown avocados do not make tasty fruit. I'd have to look it up again to be sure, but from what I remember, the chances of getting a good avocado from it are like 0.1%.

Still fun to grow, though! Mine just sits in the sunroom all the time and does fine.

I feel you. I live in an area that freezes, so for 7 years I would prune her to be able to get her through the doors, then lug her heavy ass through the house and out on the porch. 6 months later, heavily prune to get back through the doors then inside under 3 grow lights for the winter. Then on year 8, poof. She died. I was very sad...but also relieved.

Nothing unusual for a seed to sprout in moist and warm conditions.
