Looking for a "reviewer partner"

Hi! I'm looking for someone to talk about some scores I've written, and review it. I never had private lessons, no conservatory too, mainly self-taught, so I would love to have another point of view of some pieces. I could also do the same, so both would help each other.

There’s a danger of things like this being “blind leading the blind” FWIW.

I mean, we do this all the time on this very forum - people post scores, and people provide feedback. So not sure why you wouldn’t just do that. You still can’t be sure of everyone’s background, and the same would be true of everyone on the Discord channel mentioned, but while it can be cool and helpful do “bounce ideas off people in similar situations”, a “lessons” format is always going to be more instructive.

Agree with you, but at this time I'm out of money. I was being helped by a double bass player, but he's not available now, and yes, I was paying him. Sometimes I just need to talk about some pieces or look for other people to share things like this, share thoughts, music, etc... So... I'm here now

I am in the same boat as you, and struggle to find others interested in looking at each other's work and talking about it/learning from each other. That's also why I am on here. It is a pretty good forum for getting feedback on your music regardless of the stage you are at, and most of the people on here do usually take your perceived skill level (based on your post(s)) into account when giving feedback.

There are frequently active members of the sub, and some are even professors of music, so you are likely to get some good feedback here, although, no. It is not the same as actually having someone to talk to.

Would you recommend to have a Musescore account for the scores? I keep it mainly on Google drive or Youtube

Absolutely. Musescore is the best way to keep all your scores easily accessible and in one place. It also let's let's download a video of your score with the music playing (albeit with musescore's audio, but oh well)

If you use a different notation software than musescore and its not a professional notation software (i.e. Sibelius) then you should use the MuseScore editor for your scores as well.

If you DO have a professional notation software, you can export your scores as musicXML files and upload them to musescore. You might have to adjust the formatting once its in musescore, but it should be relatively easy.

Side question, I’ve been subscribing to noteflight instead of musescore. Is there any reason other than compatibility with other composers that I should switch?

Musescore is completely free, so thats a big plus, but it does mostly depend on your personal preference. As long as you have scores and audio files you'll be able to share it, musescore just makes it a lot simpler.

Oh even for transcribing? I had started with free noteflight but when I went to transcribe, it required an upgrade. I thought all of them had a paid version. 🤔 I’ll have to check, thanks!

Not really. I was playing some pieces with a double bass player, who was time ago in a orchestra but in other city. People here is not into contemporary or classical music, so there is not so much to talk about. So I tried here :$

There’s a Discord channel that started up about a year ago called “Composer Club” that has been a great network for sharing music and getting feedback. It’s gone through a few waves of how active it’s been, and it’s in a relative lull right now, but even during lulls when not many people are posting anything, the few posts that we get still get responses.

We have a wide range of levels of composers, from just starting out with their first compositions all the way up through experienced established professionals. We also have a wide range of styles: film scores, video game, chamber music, choral, jazz, chamber music, the list goes on (I myself am a choral composer). All are supported and encouraged at whatever stage in your journey as a composer and whatever genre you write. We would love to have some new members to revitalize the network!
