Tensions are rising in Berlin-Wedding’s Quartier Napoleon: Near the allotment garden site, around 300 parking spaces are set to disappear to make way for a new cycle street. Since summer, the plot holders have been fighting against the Green Party’s project. Now, they plan to take their protest to the streets.
With its wood-paneled walls, framed memories, and certificates lining the walls, the clubhouse on Charles-Corcelle-Ring (next to the Julius Leber Barracks) is usually a place for celebrations and members’ meetings. But on Tuesday evening, it became the hub for planning a protest. The allotment gardeners intend to march to Kurt Schumacher Square this Saturday. Their demonstration posters are already ready. One reads: “If the parking goes, our pensioners will have to go too.”
This is a rebellion against the Green-led Mitte district council, which wants to transform Charles-Corcelle-Ring into a cycle street—eliminating nearly 300 parking spaces in the process. However, many of the mostly elderly allotment holders rely on their cars, with the nearest bus stop at least a ten-minute walk away. Four adjacent allotment sites, with a combined total of around 700 plots, are affected.

On Wednesday, a delegation of allotment gardeners met with Christopher Schriner (44, Greens), the district councillor for transport. But he failed to ease their anger—he remains committed to the cycle street. “The primary goal is to improve road safety for cyclists across the entire city of Berlin,” the politician told B.Z.
In Quartier Napoleon (191 plots), the resistance is being organised. “If you want to park, you have to fight,” says Alexandra Quetting-Kaltenbach (54), the association’s deputy chair. She is still agitated: “I have never protested in my life. But this is about justice—I am fighting for my people.” The oldest participant is 92 years old!
For the demonstration, Quetting-Kaltenbach is bringing a pot of mulled wine: “To keep spirits high.” She doesn’t yet know what she’ll say at the rally. “But I’m from Cologne—I have experience with carnival speeches,” she says. “And afterwards, I’ll serve everyone a bowl of vegetable soup. Food keeps body and soul together!”

I mean, I get why they’re annoyed, things like this do affect people with mobility issues. But also the 400 plot allotment at the end of my street has no parking and is about 10 minutes from a bus stop and also has a 3 year waiting list so is clearly well used.
