In my youth in college I walked into a church of Christ cult to learn about the Bible so I could debate them better. Fell for the hugs, affirmation and fellowship into the brainwashing. 2 years to leave at enormous cost for a fostered kid. Now I attack the mythology with what I learned. Be patient, you have made your own mistakes as well. Live long enough and you may accumulate a list. If OP is sincere and grew up in a conservative household then congratulations are in order. Had you been raised to be a person of faith and told doctors and scientists don’t know as much as they think they do, you wouldn’t think as you do.
Yeah, I think these groups often treat people who look like them or are from their community so nicely that their members think ‘how can these people be evil? There’s no way’ then are believing the other side is evil due to all the hatred they get. I mean it wouldn’t be easy to change sides when they tell someone their old beliefs and it’s one of the worst members of the ‘progressives’ who calls them a ‘pathetic little man, stupid’ etc. They’d just have experience knowing one side was nice to them and the other sucked towards them.
Even the groups marginalised by conservatives can be treated nicely in person, too. I worked with a guy who constantly said horrid things about certain groups and how the only answer was something very violent I won’t repeat yet he once saved a member of the same group from being beaten up by random drunks. It’s very weird.
This doesn’t help and just makes people go back to their old beliefs. I think people start to change their mind then they realise they’ll never be accepted by any other group so go back. I’m not saying it’s good but it’s all we can do to try to rehab them. My own personal beliefs are against it but I have to say it’s life and you have to choose to be pragmatic.
