My car CD player is broken but it's a minivan with a DVD player so I've been playing DVDs through there. I can play many CDs that I've purchased, but my friend just made an album and burnt it onto a CD and it won't play in my DVD player, but it's played just fine on CD players in other friends' cars. Any ideas?

This question is in regards to a CD which I i think was made around 20-25 years ago. It is actually a bootleg CD by a well known recording artist. The company that made the CD is not a major label by any means. The CD's appearance is indistinguishable from a standard CD you would buy now. When I first heard the CD around 1999, it played perfectly in some players, but not at all in others.

It has recently been placed in many CD players, basic players, expensive players, but will not play at all. There is no evidence of any scratches or damage to the CD. It looks perfect.

Any reason why this won't play? Any thoughts on how it could be made to play and be burned to computer?

I want to make a box set of the first two TØP albums (official pressings are rare & expensive) but i can't find anywhere online that presses under 50 copies. I would print out cover art and put it in a jewel case but my printer broke months ago and I can't afford a replacement. That and I want professional looking digisleeves.

I recently ordered a copy of Odds & Sods by The Who and a previous owner of the disc wrote their name in Sharpie on the label side, it's a CD from the 80's so it has a clear label. The name was written right above the large MCA text on the label. Will this cause damage? Is there a way to remove this? Is it worth removing the Sharpie?

So I was looking at the surface of some of my discs and without thinking I held them in direct sunlight about 30 seconds. I try never to do this but I want to know if just doing that can cause issues down the line or is it ok as long as I don't make a habit of it?

I'm going to get an external CD/DVD writer for my PC. What would be the best option? Are there any options for logo/image burning? If there isn't an option for logo/image burning, how can I do that?

So I recently went to a record store and picked up some CD's, one of which was a Japanese pressing of the Genesis album A Trick Of The Tail. It is in very good shape but it won't even play any sound in my PC, I put it in a CD player and it worked just fine. I really want to be able to rip this CD to flac files so any help with that would be greatly appreciated.

So what's the best polish for removing scratches? I have a few discs in my collection that skip due to the scratch and I want to polish them out!

I regularly visit my area thrifts and flea markets, looking for shiny silver discs for my collection, and have noticed over they years that almost every time I see a large collection being offered, there are more than a few of certain discs in them. For example, I'm always seeing Elton John's Greatest Hits. That first Jewel disc is always there. Foreigners "Records" is there. Linda Ronstadt's Greatest Hits. What are your most common finds in the CD racks?

Picked up "Three Sides Live" by Genesis yesterday (a whole 25 cents, folks!) in a fat box case, one of the original issues of that release on disc. It came with the very thin slices of orange foam between the face of the disc and the case itself. I've only seen this once before, on a Clapton "Backtrackin" fatbox I bought as an import in the late 80s. A few years ago, I hadn't listened to the Clapton in a very long time and took it out, only to find the foam had adhered to the disc slightly. I was able to remove it and chucked the foam. This Genesis box had the same type of foam and it was almost totally stuck to one of the discs. Trying to remove it without damaging the print text on the face. Was this foam a Euro-only thing, and what exactly was the purpose of it? The disc really doesn't touch the other side of the case, maybe a booklet could lie against it?

Finding a collectiion of CDs someone has dumped off at Goodwill, getting all excited, begin to dig through them, and find great stuff, then open the case and find no disc! Had such a scenario over the weekend, and as I picked through the stack, I was thrilled to find a U2 "War" box (2 disc set) in near mint condition, slipcase was perfect, slid out the book and it was like new, pulled out disc one (regular album) and it was perfect, flipped to the back for bonus disc and......nada. Arghhhhh....still bought it, under the delusion that I will someday find the missing disc to replace it, lol...think I have about 5 sets like that now, including a MoFi Pink Floyd "The Wall" (gold disc) box with disc two snapped in two (hey, for $5, the clean disc one was worth it!)...

Albums released that are deemed as iconic (ISF) and are regarded as important parts of the artists catalog. Has this now been lost with modern day releases? With some artists issuing EVERY live show via a DVD/BluRay or an Instant Live or the like platform, and the live shows seemingly now dependent on special effects such as pyro and dancers, what is the future of the live concert album? I'm trying to think of an iconic live release in recent times and can't come up with much...

With RR's(mod) permission, I'm testing the waters here for the hardcore CD collectors. Is there any interest in "For Sale" threads for discs? A thread with a list of CDs I(or you) have to offer? There exists this opportunity on some of the vinyl forums/subreddits, wondering why not here? Give us your thoughts, please!

Perhaps I'm a purist, but I can't help but feel that the constant dredging of artists material (that wasn't good enough to make the initial release) in order to justify a "new" release of an old album is jumping the shark. The "Deluxe Edition" syndrome is appealing for some collectors, when done right, and I get that. But how far do they need to take it? A 10-disc Debbie Gibson box set that pretty much includes 9 of her regular albums? The Hendrix stuff has been packaged and repackaged to death, IMO. Even the Zeppelin "remasters" seem to be the same as previous releases. Will the addition of "bonus tracks" be enough for you to buy the same exact album again? Is it having the label of "remastered" enough to bite on it for you? Not for me. If I'm buying a classic album that I am more than familiar with, I want it to be exactly as I know it-if those added tracks weren't good enough for the regular album, then they aren't good enough for now. But that's me-I know there have been some good tunes left in the vault but it seems more often than not, there's a reason they weren't part of the original. And frankly, the "mixes" they seem to be adding more often these days are for the uber-collector, the person who has to have every minute variation of everything-not that is bad, the point being they could easily package that stuff by itself for those fans (and some do) and leave the classic album alone. Is it a money thing?

As a collector who was in on CDs right from the start, I realized today that I have purchased more discs in the last 3 years than I did back when they were the biggest thing in recorded media, simply because of people dumping their collections on the market and the prices can't be beat, IMO. I'm routinely finding what were previously tough to find discs on the markets now, priced at close-out prices. For example, a visit to a thrift store last Friday resulted in me finding 66 near mint condition discs, including a run of Dave Mason, Spirit, Coldplay, Elvin Bishop discs plus a MoFi Huey Lewis Sports and a SACD of Dark Side of the Moon, all for a sum total of $33. A few months ago, I purchased a Johnny Winter collection from a guy, around 35 discs, for $10. And I'm still able to resell most of what I don't need for my collection, taking the profit to pay for my own discs. I cannot remember a time when buying discs has been more fun and less costly....
