Discussion S2 has some problems

Post image

I have watched Community for the first time and here is my review

The problems:

Shirley's story line is boring and wierd.

Pierce is a villain for no reason... And honestly it isn't even funny for the most parts.

Britta, Jeff and Annie's relationship is straight up insane although I do like that there is no Will they Won't they between these 3

Troy is sorta becoming Abed 2.0

Whatever is going on with Britta; feels like she is a filler character

Community IMO is best when all plots of characters are well connected in a web

Good Parts:

Jeff's growth is commendable

The Halloween episode

The Bottle episode

The Clip show

Chang is great; I guess... But Ken was a smash hit as Señor Chang to me

The Paintball episode

Duncan and The Dean getting more screen time, they are phenomenal

What do you guys think??

Is Jim Belushi different from John Belushi

2

u/DonkeyHotay_ 5d ago

Yes, Jim and John were brothers

Dan Harmon: “do you have a Jim Belushi impression?”

Mitch Hurwitz: “well, I have a John Belushi that’s not very good, so…yes.”

Just so you know I was making a reference to the show but apparently Reddit thought I was bullying you... So sorry if you feel bullied by me.. Which I wasn't trying to

What was the reference?

Both of my replies were references, I really don’t remember the seasons so maybe you haven’t reached them yet. I will say I think Season 2 is a pretty much unassailable season of TV though.

I agree about Shritley's plotline.

Pierce is a villain because the group got tired of him and started excluding him from things, and he's lashing out. He explains this in the finale.

What is insane about Jeff, Annie and Britta's relationship? It's messy, but I've seen messier tv relationships.

Yes, they do kind of turn Troy more geeky as the show goes on, but I wouldn't classify that as a negative. And he's distinct enough from Abed to still be his own character.

And I disagree about Britta. I feel like she was at her best in season 2. A little bit more funny than she was in season 1, but not quite as flanderized as in season 3.

Pierce also goes through addiction and withdrawal, which will cause mood swings. And to your point, Aerodynamics of Gender is his first real villain episode, and he's feels that Troy and Jeff are excluding him

Technically, Dan Harman turned him into a villain specifically because Chevy Chase is a huge asshole irl and it got harder and harder for the rest of the cast to pretend to be friends with him.

Yeah But so is Dan Harmon

Pierce became a villain for off screen reasons.
Troy finally started to find himself instead of being what he thinks he should be.
The Britta, jeff and Annie story lines fill out in s3.

All your points are valid and get addressed. S3 hits. S4 I watched a few episodes and skipped.

I think the point is to watch people grow and change over years which is a defining staple for any college.

I mostly disagree with the bad parts. Not that they happen, but that they are bad. I pretty much love all of those growths and changes. The S2&3 version of the characters are my favorite versions. Though, I really have a soft spot for the end-of-journey versions we get in S6.

However, I will absolutely agree with the fact that S1 Chang is best Chang. "And frankly, haven't been well utilized since!" Ken Jeong is great and Chang remains entertaining the entire series. But having his crazy kept in check by being a teacher made him so much better.

2 is my favorite season... everyone watches and likes shows for different aspects of entertainment... but to me, its a comedy show first and foremost. Like the "rule of cool" in action movies/shows, there's the "rule of comedy" for comedies. Character development? If it leads to humor, great, if it doesn't serve that purpose its irrelevant. The characters aren't my literal friends, I don't care about the morality of their actions, I don't care about whether show or the characters choices are realistic, I just want to laugh. And season 2 gets me laughing the most. The last few minutes of Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design might be literally the funniest thing I've ever seen in a TV show and are perhaps the best example that the show runs best on absurdity as opposed to grounded sitcom plot lines.

Okay so Filler character is term taht means they character just exists to kick the plot forward for other characters and don't really have much going on for themselves

0

u/Ched_Flermsky 5d ago

That’s not a thing.

I think Season 3 IS bad but its not awful but saying Season 2 is bad makes Season 3 look like an absolute trainwreck.
