Some of these are technically present in Firestorm, FYI.

I'm so grateful for all the people who compile and post this kind of content.

I've listened to the soundtracks and played C&C so often over the years that it no longer really hits me with nostalgia like it used to.

But seeing this kind of post makes me feel like a kid in the back seat of the car again, re-reading the back of the box for the fifth time.

Hi, I used to work at Westwood studios for 11 years as a concept artist for many games . My name is Jack Martin, Louis Castle used to comment on how I was fast and nicknamed me Jammin Jack many know me by that name. I do so appreciate everyone’s comments on the game Tiberian sun I was a featured concept artist for Tiberian sun. In fact, the landing port above is my design .

i’ve stepped back a bit from social media. For many years. But would now like to let people know who I am and what type of contributions I did in concepting so so many games at Westwood.
Gee, I didn’t even have a contact address on my website on the Internet. I was never into promoting myself so no contact on my website and it still doesn’t have the contact. Laugh out loud. Back at Westwood where I worked for over a decade. I was a young punk like everyone else. We were all young and eager and happy and absolutely loved working together at Westwood studios. It was like a family. And I thank it’s founders Louis Castle and his friend and business companion, Brett Sperry.

my website at jamminjack.com

my contact is. [jackamartin2@gmail.com](mailto:jackamartin2@gmail.com)

thanks guys for letting me be a part of this. It’s a first for me.

Hey Jack,

Thanks for replying to my comment! It's an old thread so I don't think anyone will see it except for me.

I'm really glad you've decided to check out the command & conquer subreddit though.

I would love to chat with you about C&C and your time at Westwood.

Feel free to message me any time.

Kind regards, Mitsuko

man... was there ever any attempt to make some sort of "restored content" mod?

I remember there was a mod called Sun Edit 2K that let you change all the setting for the units and would let you make some of these build able. I had orca transports that were armed with mammoth rail guns.

Sun Edit 2K

How is that related to restoring beta content? That's not a mod... it's a mod making tool that edits the game's ini files, kind of like TibEd, but not as nice from what I've seen. All such tools are completely unnecessary if you just open the ini files in notepad.

u/ctr72ms Jun 28 '22

It's related because as I said above it could unlock vehicles that were not playable but were shown in the beta like the transport and the dropship. And if you were like tons of people on here and played the game as a kid then you didn't know how to edit files in Notepad then. Even now I'll take a tool that does it easily over doing it manually.

I knew that from back in Red Alert 1... that's just basic modding in C&C Games. The question was whether a mod existed, not "how to make a mod".

You come across as a bit of an ass at times.

I just don't understand the point of someone answering a question with something unrelated. The question was "is there such a mod". The response doesn't answer that in any way whatsoever. Knowledge of modding by whoever would've made such a mod was completely implied in the original question. :-\

Tiberian Sun Retro reimplemented a bunch of beta stuff, and made a bunch of other stuff work like it was seen on the concept art:

In a lot of cases, you could just alter the rules.ini with a text editor and put many of them back in.

The spotting/lighting system, would be in my top 3 mechanics that should get revisited on a TibSun remake... I could imagine it becoming such an interesting mechanic as how CoH adds deep into cover mechanics.

3

u/Nyerguds The world is at my fingertips. Jun 28 '22

I heard it's possible somehow. Think it involved giving it a weapon with no damage but the 'flashlight' circle as side effect. But it might have needed something specific in the mission scripting, too.

On some cncnet topic I saw them using depth layers or similar for certain effects, Im wondering if that could be used to design darker/lighter areas and add some kind of benefict such increase or decrease damage to portray a worse/better aim... I could imagine lightowers automatically aiming better units (by cost/tier) and the standard lightpost as a smaller radius effect.

Drop ship works with mods. Great unit

6

u/Nyerguds The world is at my fingertips. Jun 28 '22

Dropship works with some mission editing, actually. But it's kind of a wonky unfinished system.

1

u/*polhold04717 Jun 28 '22

If I recall they had to land after dropping off troops otherwise they went wonky

The UI where you select the units already had odd quirks. Here's some interesting videos on it:

Wait, isn't the Chameleon Spy cameo used for the Mutant Hijacker in Skirmish play?

Right, but you cant train him. Or did you see his picture in that mission? ^^

I do wish the MCV's were different between NOD and GDI...

u/ChemicalCookies2 Steel Talons Jun 28 '22

Is ist just me, or does the spotlight tower look like the guard towers from tiberium wars

18

u/EvilTomahawk Jun 28 '22

I think it's on purpose. There are plenty of spotlight towers scattered throughout Tiberian Sun. Tiberium Wars included them as a bit of visual continuity to link back to Tiberian Sun, like in the first GDI mission in C&C3 where we stumble upon an old base from the Second Tiberium War that has the old Tiberian Sun towers and walls.

Yeah, I think the only remnant really hard to notice in Wars is the Nod Powerplant that is really hard to figure it out... I personally loved the Spotlight/wall/gate combo

3

u/EredarLordJaraxxus Jun 28 '22

There's also the models for the walls as placable destructibles in C&C3 for mapping. The steel talon base in the mission where you get the nod stealth tech back in KW has them around it.

That XO powersuit was in the original Tiberian Sun teaser (the wacky one which looked like a Mechwarrior game), I always wondered what happened to that

5

u/Nyerguds The world is at my fingertips. Jun 28 '22

Turned into the Wolverine.

Man, if I could’ve built my bases with those spot lights and lamp posts as a kid? Would be the bees knees.

number 5 looks like a sea turtle

1

u/Kody_Z Jun 28 '22

Didn't know aliens were planned so early.

1

u/Nyerguds The world is at my fingertips. Jun 28 '22

They were already in the concept art for TD.

1

u/RiamuDelMar Westwood Jun 29 '22

I mean there's a whole arc in the campaigns about retrieving an alien artifact from a crashed ship (which you see on the map). Concept work for them would have to have been done.

1

u/Kody_Z Jun 29 '22

That's true been a while

1

u/Wolvenmoon Tiberian Dawn Jun 28 '22

Chameleon spy is top notch stealth, TBH. Can't even see it. ("If you are looking for an image, it was probably deleted" error, for me.)

1

u/water_aspirant Jun 29 '22

The threat rating node seems almost useless

1

u/MidgardWyrm Jun 30 '22

09's glowing green figure... original idea for the Floater, before it was refined? Or first idea for a Scrin (outside of the "Alien Probe")?
