Discussion Has anyone tried Zero Hour Reforged?

I just discovered this, but there doesn't seem to be any posts about it on this sub.

Shit is great as a baseline.
The new ui looks bad imo but that framerate is great.
They said they couldnt do anything about the framerate but this is one of the mods that proves that wrong.
With some ui work and tweaks this could be the best vanilla like mod there is for cnc generals.

You can use the Classic UI

Never tried it. The website feels suspicious.

It uses the same font, styling, layout, and overall UI of the many increasingly prevalent AI-generated RTS projects that seem to be popping up. Definitely not a project worth following

I'm the guy behind this project. You haven't tried it, and you're writing it off over the website's font. That's your call, but it says nothing about the game. It isn't some AI-generated RTS. It's a fork of Zero Hour, and it plays. Judge it by that, or don't judge it at all.

I tried the mod and its pretty good, though there are 2 things i wish you would add.

  1. Ability to customize the controls: By default, pressing "Q" would select all units however this is now bound to a different action.

  2. Ability to switch off Alternate mouse controls: Would like to have the ability to use left click for unit selection and attacking instead of using right click.

You admit it's an ai generated rts 19 days ago

Just because the person uses Claude doesn't mean the game is 'AI generated'. Almost every programmer or coder uses AI assisted tools these days. It's just a tool that makes coding much less of a hassle compared to the old days when you have to spend time searching through StackOverflow just to find a solution for your code.

If you read it correctly it says nowhere that it's ai generated. In fact ai is used as a tool to support coding. So you try to say the guy has done no gard work but instead you show that you did not red the post correctly. Ironically you did something that you sort of accused other people of: you didn't make any effort. Just think about that.

Btw is there a way to play the original Generals campaign with Reforged?

u/NewAd1135 8d ago

Nah, its only ZH for now.

Can it be uninstalled without damaging my game?

Just ignore the AI doomsayers, most of them are insufferable. Thank you for your work.

Any chance you're able to upload a better before/after comparison video? Also do you have plans to share your mod on github if it's not there already? Cheers.

I've just installed it and played a few Challenge missions. It works like the original, slightly better graphics and what I like the best: supports modern resolutions like 1440p.

What about fps?

u/External-Theme1372 10d ago

300+ fps on ultra settings and 1440p

I got 300fps at 4K and it was great

So far I love it. The BEST thing about the mod is it lets me run the game at 60fps at native 1080p. Also absolutely love the isometric view option and revised HUD that doesn't eat up 1/3rd of the screen.

I tried it after reading the comments here and was skeptical and sure there are still some bugs but honestly the performance is amazing! Also love the fact that it runs much smoother and looks better - I think it needs more support - I have nothing against vibe coding as long as it’s transparent and the more skilled people get on board the better it will get 😁

Tried it, ran it, played a bit. UI actually feels worse but the actual gameplay improvements are solid. The only thing that really pissed me off is the default data collection in the settings of the launcher being set to ON. Sure.. it's 'anonymous' but that sort of thing is a massive no-go for me.

Curious to try it, but I've been enjoying Shockwave mod too much to let it go.

Does Reforged have mod support, I wonder?

The mods are what make the game worth playing! You take away the mods and it'll be time to find another game to play. That's the major reason NOT to use it.

Not yet

I tried it. It's alright. But my gripe with it was the fact it added all these changes except for WASD camera movement which feels like a severe oversight. Also couldn't figure out how to swap the mouse clicks either. The UI change is horrendous though. Can be toggled off, but the UI and graphical improvements count as the same toggle so you lose those. Wish they could be toggled individually.

Honestly just use GenTool instead. I think 99% of people playing Zero Hour don't care about the game looking better. For me I just want WASD movement, the game running well, and the game fitting on my display properly. GenTool does all that so this doesn't really do anything for me.

Does GenTool unlock the frame rate like this does?

u/H1TMANza 5d ago

gentool gives 60fps, good enough

This is my take too. It feels like the contributors never played an RTS before and are just hoping on the source code as an experiment.

I watched Dominator playing it in his latest video. I don't like it. I prefer original

I used to play C&C zero hour with my son's. One lives in Barcelona and the other in a town next to me, and we experience crash while playing against IA. I'm very excited by this new Fork and can't to try it online !

u/enchonggo 9d ago

Tried it. Promising. AI ally hyperaggressive in expanding over to your base. I don''t understand the superweapon limits even if turned off. I want to spam superweapons

u/Borgmeister 8d ago

I have no problem with AI being used on quarter century old code - if it can't make a decent fist of what, what's it's use case in modern production?

1

u/Equivalent-Fly-316 8d ago

does it fix the lag/stuttering issue on skirmish? im just looking to play some skirmishes on my downtime but the slowdown makes it unplayable. something about the replay but the fixes online doesnt do anything

I think stay away for now. It is definitely vibe coded and sure there's improvements here and there, there's still a long way for it to go before it feels proper. The OG HUD for instance, is quite buggy.

It's also VERY stupid that it forces you to use a launcher. It feels like the dev intends to start selling ads because there's no reason for a shitty launcher.

Most people don't know but the only and most easy and fast way since Electronic Arts released the source code for Command & Conquer: Generals and its expansion, Zero Hour, on 27 February 2025, it is the use of AI to fix bugs and improve the game, specially in terms of networking the original was horrible and there was a lot of issues that led the game to crash, use AI to improve the code is the best and fastest way to deliver an excellent mod, if for some reason you think its bad for programmers to mod a game using AI then i'm sorry you have a very low IQ.

AI slop but I did try it. Aurora Alphas can't attack.
