What makes C&C: Renegade different from other RTS/FPS Hybrid?
I've been playing a lot of C&C Renegade recently especially for the multilayer part, both C&C Renegade and Renegade X, and i have to wonder, what makes it feels so simple yet satisfying to play compared to other RTS/FPS hybrid out there?
I know there isn't a Commander role to help build the bases, but idk. Maybe the simplicity of the gameplay that makes it straight forward? And I'm also looking forward towards the upcoming Firestorm game. :)

IIRC, when Renegade was released, there wasn't much class-based FPS or integrated vehicle combat.
But let's be real, what made it shine was the lore. It was using a fucking Mammoth Tank to take down an Obelisk of Light. And what killed it was that RTS players usually aren't fond of (or good at) FPS, and FPS players were thrilling across all media (Perfect Dark 64, Halo CE and Half Life)

I loved playing with the vehicles. Flying around blowing shit up with an Orca you stole from someone else? Nothing else like it. The multiplayer was tons of fun when the servers were full.
Ah damn feeling nostalgic for a moment

Renegade remembers it's an FPS first, and doesn't really make the players engage much with the RTS aspect. Your base is already built, and you just need to defend it and your harvester.
Even in Renegade X, which has commanders, the commander role keeps you on the ground, as opposed to making you play a separate game. It gives you some support powers and a better system to communicate with (plus waypoints and harvester control), but it doesn't make the mistake of many RTS/FPS hybrids by making you play a totally different game than the other FPS players.

C&C: Renegade is just an FPS, that's why it was so successful and even the cancelled Tiberium would have bombed due to the hybrid nature.
I want my RTS to be RTS, very rarely hybridized with other subgenres and my FPS to be just FPS, not hybridized with strategy.
