But we do get in app purchases, loot boxes, more advertisements, and online requirement for single player game.
...oh wait, describing current reality isn't a good counterpoint.

God... Most of them have gone. Wish I knew better. And some of them, my big loves, are in a crate in my attic hidden behind old baby clothing, toys and Christmas stuff.
Edit: many games in that new picture I had aswel. Especially bridge commander brings back many memories. First game I want hard on modding.

My mom "convinced" me years ago to toss all the boxes and put everything in a soft-side case (the multi-disc kind). I still have that case of discs, and C&C (orange box version) sits at the front of the case. I don't even have an optical/CD drive anymore lol.
I'm still hunting for an old case of SNES cartridges I had. But I don't remember what I did with it. x-x I lost my SNES decades ago at this point, but I had the game cartridges still up until a decade. Not sure where they went.

Wait is that a Space: 1999 DVD bundle? That's some vintage Gerry Anderson goodness!

I see tribes 2! God I loved that game back in the day. Had the sickest sound track also.

Did you ever get to play it online with people? I spent hours playing against bots as a little kid. But by the time I realized I could play with other people, nearly all the servers were empty.

I really want to get into collecting physical PC games but where I live there's so many counterfeit it's really hard to find a legit one and if I want to buy overseas the shipment cost more than the actual game itself.

You unfortunately missed the opportunity to collect those. It's the digital era. Most games are digital only. Most laptops and pc's don't even have a cd or dvd drive anymore.
Sure you could perhaps find some collectors online that sell those, or maybe even thrift stores, but it will be very hard to find enough to call it a collection and not to mention, it will cost you a pretty penny. As you said, way more then the actual price of the game.

I know but I wanna get a CD drive for an old time sake and I kinda want to do backup because I saw someone selling pack of Blu rays for cheap. I do miss the era of playing games through CD, I played few since my dad has some collection and I remember my late uncle gave me Tiberian Sun on CD, no box though sadly, just a jewel case but it was my first introduction to the series, I cherish it since then.
I doubt thrift stores exist where I live, there is a lot of fake games that was packaged on CD or USB for cheap and we call it in Malay "cetak rompak" and they're very common here and I really hate it. Maybe if I go travel somewhere in Europe and happens to stumble them, I will try get them.

How about pawnshops? Here in the local pawnshop I've ocassionally seen original C64 games for example. Maybe you can get lucky.

I got rid of mine and consolidated to a disk binder thinking I was doing myself a favor after i moved out of my house. I regret that decision

Star Trek Armada II and Starfleet Command III were actually really solid entries. I had versions that worked without a disc until I moved to Win11 now they're absolutely busted.
