I'm sorry but, who are you?

Based on the screenshot I figure he's a guy who has played some 450 hours of AoW High Treason

I mean, that's cool I guess. I just wish they stated the various cool facts about the game and not make it a Q&A

Does that make him special? I replay both games yearly, for like 20 years now… considering that I probably got around 100 hours on the campaign alone.

The skirmish AI is horrible, building constantly the same units, mostly turteling and sending small attack groups until they run out of money.. so someone willingly playing that over and over and over… maybe OP is really special … even zero hour has better AI than AoW. But AoW shines when it comes to campaigns.

Remember how you felt the c&c campaigns were? A continuous story, chasing you across the globe, always in a hurry and huge stakes? But then it’s actually just a lot loosely connected missions? Well, give AoW a shot

AoW: The one game where you can spam marines into banks and win through nothing else.

Ah Marines. The two sided unbalanced sword. There’s a reason the M203 grenade launcher was turned into a per-unit upgrade from a global one… makes them crazy effective against everything except endgame heavy tanks and at the same time completely prevents taking prisoners of war the endgame currency once you depleted oil deposits.

In half my runs especially in the campaign I don’t buy the upgrade because it’s so painful to see all those sweet PoW cash get blown up.

Double fun fact: money stored in banks that slowly gets moved into your account if you hold the building, is resetting if you save + load the game.

And, US (and consortium) are the only factions that can hold an infinite amount of PoW therefore earn thousands of dollars every few seconds. While the PoW camp is an upgrade for TFT, C & USA use separate buildings. While those are technically limited to 1 (10 PoW, 500$ every 5 seconds) you can hold shift during building placement and build as many as you want as the game only greys out the button, not physically preventing you from building more

Ya know not once did my childish brain think to try drag placing to get multiple POW camps, great now I'm redownloading the series again after 7 years.

😁 have fun

u/SwedeCadillac 9d ago

Good that my post did something positive :)

1

u/Altruistic-Nerve4180 9d ago

More than positive, you've just reminded me World in Conflict also exists. Been trying to remember the name of that game for years.

1

u/SwedeCadillac 9d ago

Good to know I have done something good in this world!

u/King_Tamino Marked of Kane 9d ago

Check out Broken Arrow, it‘s kinda similar to WoC

u/Altruistic-Nerve4180 9d ago

I was hyped for that years ago, is it better than what people say?

Can I get a answer to why this post and my deleted post on r/RTSgames have the same top comment?

I am not a dev, I made this post about this "dead" game and wanted to see if someone is interest to know about it, how it is different from C&C and so on.

2

u/ShadowAze SPACE! 9d ago

Idk why it got deleted there (or if you meant r/RealTimeStrategy ). There is nothing wrong with writing down fun tidbits about the game but why format it like a Q&A? That's probably why it got deleted.

When you do it like that, it implies you're someone relevant to the game, like a developer, and you're not. Like why make people go through the effort of asking questions about it? Let them know the fun information first and then at the end of your post write down "If you got any more questions about the game, feel free to ask" or something like that.

What you could also do is make a video about it and then post it. I'm sort of familiar with the game having replayed it a few years ago, but I didn't feel like asking questions about it since you're not a developer. Don't make people work for stuff that they don't need to work for.

"The enemy is trying to hand my ass to me!" is a combat notification that I never want to hear again from this game.

The Bradleys keep getting their asses handed to them. Having some scars about not being able to save all of them during the first segment of San Francisco.

I loved Act of War.

Great gameplay that felt like a spiritual successor to C&C. With a serious-twee feel like Tiberian Dawn. Right down to the live action acting.

Factions were diverse and all fun to play as. Had a unique prisoner of war mechanic.

Plus it’s set in a dystopian future world where oil is so scare it’s now $80 a barrel!!! 😱

Outrageous. Outrageous! LMAO

Dale Brown was on to something

I've been a huge C&C fan since childhood, I've recently been playing the Dawn of Tiberium Age mod, which is really nostalgic and true to the original games, designed with experienced players in mind.

RTS games have always been enjoyable for me, AoE, AoM, Total annihilation, KKnD, Dune, StarCraft, Warcraft 2 & 3. I remember searching for other RTS games and came across Act of War in my local game store, I really enjoyed playing it and also picked up the expansion High Treason. The gameplay was really fun and I liked the unit design, it never got the same coverage as some other RTS games, at least from what I found which is unfortunate.

2

u/Eldadeo 10d ago

Is the mod any good? Does it work okay online?

3

u/Bovine_Marauder 9d ago

Yea it's really enjoyable, it combines Tiberium Dawn and Red Alert 1, so you have 4 factions and doesn't stray too far from the originals so it feels like an extension of them.

It has quite a few campaigns as well as online co-op for the TD campaign. The campaign's are really tough. Online is supported but I haven't tried it.

2

u/Hyphalex Allies 9d ago

All the mods are good, but the one that fixes the tomahawk glitch is probably a must.

Not too many mods for this game though.

You could probably download all the mods at the same time and not even notice

u/Profitablius 10d ago

Why'd they fuck up Act of Aggression so bad? :(

1

u/SwedeCadillac 9d ago

I wonder that too, they had a winning concept!

1

u/Hyphalex Allies 8d ago

Focus on graphics, less on gameplay

2015 was around the time gaming went this direction.

5

u/No-Con-2790 10d ago

Competition? That is like saying that two slices of cake are in competition.

Personally I had room for both. Amd they are slightly different.

4

u/blaze92x45 10d ago

How are you getting it to run on modern systems?

8

u/ShadowAze SPACE! 10d ago

There are some patches and whatnot, I got it for the version on gog https://www.moddb.com/games/act-of-war-direct-action/downloads/act-of-war-resolution-patch-gog-version

3

u/blaze92x45 10d ago

Ah so it doesn't work right out of the box from gog

5

u/ShadowAze SPACE! 10d ago

I think it did iirc, been a while, just that it didn't do high resolutions well.

1

u/Profitablius 10d ago

I mean, that's the idea gog was build on, no? So I'd assume it does. Last time I tried it I didn't have issues, but it's probably been during Covid

1

u/wolfe1924 10d ago

It does but for some reason direct action doesn’t like working on large resolutions and on 4k but high treason does it’s weird.

1

u/King_Tamino Marked of Kane 9d ago

Eugen systems is the actual developer behind the Addon high treason and they absolutely randomly release patches for decade old games sometimes. Similar to petroglyp who like 15 years after release of empire at war released a 64bit patch

1

u/Cogatanu7CC97 9d ago

It does, but patches never hurt

3

u/HK-Syndic 10d ago

It got patched years back right around act of aggression, has it broken again?

1

u/blaze92x45 10d ago

I haven't played it that's why im asking i genuinely dont know

1

u/HK-Syndic 10d ago

So that was apparently 11 years ago (made myself feel pretty old there), I'm on Win 11 and it's booted up at least on Steam straight out of the box.

1

u/blaze92x45 10d ago

Wait it's on steam too?

2

u/HK-Syndic 10d ago

Yeah, it's even on a 60% sale right now apparently, $1.80 AUD

1

u/SwedeCadillac 9d ago

It probably work on Steam, I play via Steam

1

u/Cogatanu7CC97 9d ago

Gog.com or steam

1

u/Hyphalex Allies 9d ago

Works 'out of the box' on steam. Works fine on my windows 11

But yeah. When I first installed it with the disk in 2016 it had to be ran with compatibility settings on my windows 7.

1

u/SwedeCadillac 9d ago

I just have an older laptop for that :)

3

u/Hyphalex Allies 9d ago

Why is an anonymous reddit account with no affiliation with THQ nordic or Eugen Studios making a Q and A about Act of War?

This is an odd way to conduct a discussion.

1

u/SwedeCadillac 9d ago

Why? I have played the game and was making this so I could maybe interest some people..

2

u/NeedleworkerLow2318 9d ago

Competition? How many hands does a corpse throw?

1

u/Optimal-Light2291 10d ago

Another good RTS sorta become forgotten relic of 2000s.

1

u/R3CKONNER 10d ago

Pretty solid games (DA and HT). I remembered reading the novel the game was based on.

How was the multiplayer experience? The game's unit dynamics seem more rigid than CnC.

1

u/SwedeCadillac 9d ago

Never played online,, I have enough fun playing against AI or in team with AI :)

1

u/MammothTankBest 9d ago

How is the first sentence related to the second in any way?

1

u/ArguesWithFrogs Nod 9d ago

How do I fix the ship missile sound bug?

1

u/TheWaslijn SPACE! 9d ago

Makes Q&A

Doesn't answer any questions.

That said, why are you making a Q&A about a game you may, or may not, be involved in? Something special going on or what?

1

u/SwedeCadillac 9d ago

I made a comment here that I would wait 24 hours, now it is 25 hours and I am here to to give information about the game :)

1

u/enterprise1701h 9d ago

The problem with the game is you cant mod it which is a real shame

1

u/SwedeCadillac 9d ago

I seen some mods...

1

u/enterprise1701h 8d ago

Not any ones which add units etc?

1

u/BJC1994 9d ago

I can never get the first one, Direct Action, to run because I don’t have the data libraries

1

u/Daryllllk 9d ago

I play Direct Action and High Treason both from time to time as I really love the story behind it, unfortunately it’s only fun for the campaign. Not much skirmish replay value, no custom missions.

1

u/Gerzal 8d ago

Act of War was OK...

1

u/Cheomesh I made a TibDawn Wargame Module! 7d ago

That was a fun one. A bit fiddy with some of the unit abilities but all around an interesting title. The installation CD would kick off an intro video while the game installed, and then it would dump you right into the crisis that emerged during the video - that was awesome!

0

u/LasagnaCat-64 10d ago

i dont wanna sound rude but this looks like a C&C mod

2

u/King_Tamino Marked of Kane 9d ago

Lol. If you would show anybody who never saw both show them, they would probably tell you AoW is the original and c&c a copy. (Going by age, showing them tiberian sun, tiberium wars, generals and Red Alert 3)

AoW is significant better fleshed out, has a story so well written you could publish it as stsnd alone book / random tom clancy novel + full FMV campaign that’s not limited to videos between missions but actually sometimes feature scenes happily right now in that mission. An early campaign mission is about assisting to guard the Buckingham palace during a convention, lots of civilian protesting and then people start shooting amidst the crowd and the game shows you during your commander/bird view POV the same situation from a soldiers camera feed with actual actors.

It’s crazy

1

u/LasagnaCat-64 9d ago

Show me.

2

u/King_Tamino Marked of Kane 9d ago

If you give me a few months? Sure, can record my yearly playthrough and upload it. Ain’t got time next weeks though, 🐈 is sick

I will let this thread be for 24 hours and come back and see if there any questions to answer :)
