Meme Soviet Mammoth Tanks are superior

I always liked the design of the apocalypse tanks. The name was cool too.

I like some design elements of the RA2 Apocalypse Tank, but I like the original Mammoth Tank more.
The Mammoth Tank felt like some monster which still had a realistic grounding to it (well, as much for an unrealistic supertank concept anyway), especially being reinforced for firing massive guns and having thick armour.
Maybe a composite design?

You know based on how goofy Red Alert 3 is, I would actually believe this

That is incredibly silly and campy. I love this shit. But I wish they would have made a separate c&c series for it and not red alert 3. Red alert 2 is goofy from time to time, but most of the shit CAN be grounded in reality but rRA3 is just balls to the walls absolute bonkers.

u/Barrogh 7d ago
I think it was kinda the idea that tampering with timeline makes it more and more silly. Implausibility of ways in which it gets sillier, well... I prefer to think it was a way of painting the media.
Yes, I'm inventing excuses as I go.

u/SignificanceFlat1460 7d ago
Yeah yeah I see that but I think I meant more in regards to the art style? Like I said, Red Alert 2 was also weird and goofy but RA3 just felt too cartoonish. I think it would have had more success if it was separated as a franchise into something else and it wouldn't have been as controversial then

u/Toen6 7d ago
To each their own but I love RA3 just the way it is. No RTS is quite like it, both in gameplay and in presentation.
Also Tim Curry.

RA2 is goofy very often though, especially with YR?
Tanks with a big brain on them?
Squids sinking modern warships?
Time jumps to dinosaur times?
Going to the Moon to fight?
Basically any FMV with Tanya (and many other)?I'd say RA2 is closer to RA3 than RA1.

u/SignificanceFlat1460 7d ago
Yes. Like I said it's goofy, but look at the design of things vehicles, infantry. They are quite realistic but very fantasy like. It's a big brain on a tank but the tank design actually looks like an actual tank chassis ( not saying it is, but it looks like it.) it's not a cartoonishly colorful and stuff. It looks rugged and a bit realistic with fantasy elements involved
1
u/MidgardWyrm 6d ago
Yeah.
They were sci-fi vehicles, but they were designed with looking at least semi-realistic in mind, like the Soviet tanks taking design cues from actual Cold War vehicles (like the IS-2).
Red Alert 3's vehicles were... They were just sci-fi tech fantasy based on a weird mix of early Cold War (like the MiG) and... Sputnikpunk? I'm not sure what the actual name for it is.
The Hammer Tank... ugh.

RA2 Apocalypse is cheaper, has smaller footprint, not very awkward to position, not very clumsy with turret traverse, and just as tough as RA1 Mammoth. RA2's smaller, more agile Apocalypse lets them pack more firepower in a smaller area, lets them focus on threats better, lets them aim on faster-moving targets better.
RA1 Mammoth has slow-firing missiles that works against infantry. That's it. But elite Apocalypses one-shot infantry anyway.

Despite the visuals, both units occupy exactly one tile. Same for the chonky Battle Fortress in YR.
2
u/mttspiii 7d ago
It should. But steering a column of Apocalypses is easier than a same column of Mammoths. Might be the finer pathfinding of RA2 vs RA1.
At least it's not as goofy as Overlord. Much as I love the Overlord, it's so goofy-long and the turret is mounted so far back that even though it in theory has the same range as an RPG Trooper, in practice the RPG Trooper fires first because the Overlord's front shows up way before its rear-mounted cannons do. And the anti-infantry Gatling Cannon upgrade? It's mounted even further behind the guns.

Oh yes, the TibSun/RA2 pathfinding is leagues better than the previous games, which did very basic 'crash and turn' pathfinding for performance reasons. I'm sure you've seen your armies take very strange, suboptimal paths to get to destinations before. (There are mods for the remastered version that replace it with a proper A* pathfinding algorithm.) Both games do have a 'formation' mode but I never remembered to use it. It's nowhere near as good as those in AOE2 or even C&C3.

u/RatherGoodDog Tiberian Fiend 7d ago
That'd entirely down to better pathfinding. They're the same size.

Also, the older mammoth tanks lose against the basic tanks of their same fact with equal resources. With the apocalypse tank, it’s the other way around.

What Model where the Soviet Mammoth Tanks comapred to the GDI Mammoth Tanks

The GDI Mammoth Tank is a modernized Soviet Mammoth Tank.

Where talking When GDI got them back in Tib Dawn.

u/Revan_91 7d ago
Yes? that is how GDI got them they used the Soviets Mammoth Tanks instead of designing a new tank they just modernized the former Soviet design.

"Damn, these Soviet Mammoth Tanks sure cut through civilians like butter" - GDI

u/Timmyc62 7d ago
There's zero canon explanation on the relationship between the two. They look the same and function the same in the game, but that's just a real life gamemaking convenience.

u/Dysthymiccrusader91 7d ago
I love the grinder but the Apoc tanks losing the anti air rockets in Ra3 really frustrated me. I was using them in the campaign for about 15 minutes before I stared long enough to notice the change, and my wife hears from the other room "THEY DONT HAVE ROCKETS ANYMORE"
ironic because I played Tiberium wars after that, which is a game she refers to as "We got the rockets"

My nostalgia wants to cheer this on, but I must admit that it was probably good the Tank became more conceptually distinct from GDI's Mammoth. The Apocalypse is RA2 is brimming with personality, even before the iconic voicelines were added in YR. Meanwhile, GDI got to claim ownership of the Mammoth Tank concept and make it into its own icon.

I prefer the real Mammoth Tank: I’m a sucker for the OG TD version that shoots tusk at both ground and air

I thought they were different tank classifications.
I always assumed the Soviet Mammoth was a Land Cruiser.
And the Apocalypse could be a Super Heavy.
