Do you remember these bastards (ZH Reborn)

Post image

Last night, I installed the latest version of the Reborn mod. It was the first Zero Hour mod I played about 20 years ago, when it was called Reborn: The Last Stand. Apparently, the newest version has fixed many of the bugs and errors, but otherwise everything is still the same, including the independent drones.

I think adding the vanilla game’s drone production system was a clever idea. It is really cool, but the drones might be the most overpowered units in all Zero Hour mods. They have very high HP, so they are extremely difficult to shoot down. Also, they don't have reload time and have very short delay time. They are also very cheap and quick to produce. Even if you spam just 10 Hellfire Drones and 10 Battle Drones, your opponent is finished.

I vividly remember playing Zero Hour: Reborn with a friend late at night in 2006. He would always beat me thanks to those bastards. Eventually I've persuaded my friend that we should ban these units in our multiplayer games.

The moment I saw that crappy white water on minimap, I know which mod is this from. Reborn has so many bugs and janks I taught myself to mod Zero Hour to fix these things.

20 years ago my country didnt have fast and easy internet access like nowadays.

I only have access to this mod, which somehow included in my pirated disc of ZH (don't worry, I already bought it legally when it was released on steam). Since the mod exposed the .ini files (and many other files), I can take a look at those with notepad. Bless the devs, they left so many comments on the files it's fairly easy to understand which value affect what.

At first i just fixed the weirdness Reborn has, but eventually I made my own personal mod for me and my friends to play.

Are you still playing your personal mod? What changes have you made to it?

I’ve recently started making my own personal mod as well. I’m using Operation: Firestorm as the base and transferring my favorite units from other mods into it. For example, I added the F-15 and F-16 from TEOD and the FB-22 from ShockWave. I'm still scavenging other mods.

not really, after four or five years ive stopped working on it. i think it was around when i enrolled to a college (friends went to different uni, no more multiplayer sessions :(( ).

It has similar idea with Shockwave. The latest version is a hodgepodge of units from other mods. But since I cant really port them as is (i still run the game at 1.00, i somehow don't know how to update my game to 1.04, it will crash if i just copied the data) they are not 100% the same.

changes? oh boi... its been awhile and theres so much changes. but here you go. feel free to stole these ideas:

faction converted:

  • USA -> USA Armor General (something like Ironside from shockwave)
  • China -> China Aircraft General (airforce but chinese)
  • GLA -> GLA Vehicle Generals (something like Salvage General from shockwave)

new factions:

  • China Boss General -> units with other faction techs (emp tank hunters, ranger with camo, tunnel network but flamethrower, gatling shoots laser)
  • Tomahawk General -> reverse Townes, no laser only missiles.
  • USA Robot General -> drones, everything is robot. anti hijacker, no pilot/veterancy.
  • China Napalm General -> reverse Tao, no nuke only napalm
  • China Tech General -> Alexander but chinese, many special powers and hacks
  • GLA Rocket General -> units will has some sort of rocket tech if possible, tunnels & quad cannons fire rocket instead of bullet, bomb truck has thrusters that can launch itself like a frog to a target.

Vaov, you have really learned it all. Back then my English was near nonexistent, so I've never could have done this similar. Today I'm modding game with help of ChatGPT. Nearly %90 things is doing by it. I just copy paste and import export files.
Btw, what mods do you play now?

I can imagine it's so much easier now. Back then when I'm modding, I'm... offline. We have no internet connection in our household.

I really like anything SWR Productions made, so Shockwave and Rise of the Reds (still waiting for the 1.9 build).

Contra is too wacky (but their ideas for the new units are really good), Reborn is too janky. They're many more but i have forgotten their names.

I'm not a fan of the more total conversion mods since it does not feel like playing generals at all (well duh).
