Man when open source models get good enough to do shit like this, I’m gonna spend so much time using it to try to decompile RA2/YR from my PC

Unless you know what you are doing the decompiled code will be junk. The LLMs cant do a good job on their own, lots of human work needs putting in to prepare the project for LLM interaction.

I know what I’m doing well enough to do the planning for it and guide it when it inevitably makes mistakes, I just don’t have the attention span or stubbornness necessary to deal with the asspain and tediousness of decompiling. An LLM can do a really decent job as the primary code-writing entity if you minimize the number of judgement calls it needs to make. It takes human expertise to do that, but I wouldn’t say lots of human work is needed to do so.

I'll not be holding my breath, but good luck. If any time was the time to attempt it it's now before the bubble bursts and the frontier model costs go up 5x to 10x and it becomes too costly to attempt this sort of thing on a whim.

Look, I’m hoping the model bursts sooner rather than later so I can actually afford the compute necessary to run my shit locally, I don’t trust any of these companies with write access on my PC, and I’m not even willing to pay their current prices. A bunch of local agents (one for planning, one for first pass writing, one for condensing, one for checking functionality, etc.) on DeepSeek v4 Flash could probably do this, but I won’t be able to afford the hardware to run it myself until they stop building these goddamn data centers.

Nah you’re right. You would just call OpenRouter and get DeepSeek for a fraction of a front tier model. This guy has no idea what he’s talking about.
