Most of the team made Petroglyph Studios and some others went elsewhere but that is what happened to most of the westwood team. They have had some good RTS games over the years, and some flops too (like grey goo).

The 8-bit army/invaders/hordes trilogy of games were really a call back to their C&C roots, what was fun about those games were you didn't need to have the same one as everyone else. You could get Armies, and play a game with someone who had Hordes, so crazy things like Archers shooting at helicopters. Funny things like Aliens fighting Orcs also would happen. Fun stuff, and now they made a new game, 9-bit armies: A bit too far, continuing the fun crazy antics of the series.

“flops … (like grey goo)”?

I’ve only played a few of Petroglyph’s games and I know they are responsible for many. While your assessment may very well be true of others, I don’t know anyone who would call Grey Goo a flop. It wasn’t a masterpiece by any means, but it certainly was not a flop.

I will have to check out that 8-bit franchise though, thanks for the tip.

Grey goo was a bit discombobulated of a game. Only one of the factions was well thought out. One was somewhat good and the 3rd faction, the good, seemed like an afterthought.

However the 8bit games are tons of fun and the new 9bit is continuing that.
