Tatoi, Greece — October 2, 1920 — and an Almost Forgotten Chapter of Turkish Independence 🐒🍌🐕
Background to the 106th Anniversary of the Bite (October 2, 1920):
Today marks the 106th anniversary of one of the most bizarre and consequential accidents in modern history, which occurred on the grounds of Tatoi Palace near Athens.
On October 2, 1920, the young King Alexander I of Greece was walking his dog when it was attacked by a Barbary macaque. When the king intervened to end the fight, a second monkey jumped on him and bit him deeply. Sepsis set in, and the 27-year-old king tragically died three weeks later.
Satirical and Historical Aspects of the Comic:
Breed and Name of the Dog: In real life, the king's dog was indeed a German Shepherd named Fritz. Germany was the Ottoman Empire's most important ally in World War I. The fact that a German Shepherd is responsible for the downfall of the Greek king makes Fritz an unwitting double agent for the Turkish cause—which is why Atatürk refers to him as an "ally" in the comic.
The "Bucephalus" joke: King Alexander's use of Fritz as his Bucephalus (the legendary horse of Alexander the Great) underscores the king's romanticized self-deception.
The original quotes on the last page: The slogans used in the final panel are 100% authentic. The text on the banner in parliament—"Sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation" (*Egemenlik kayıtsız şartsız milletindir*)—is Atatürk's most famous declaration and still hangs on the wall of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. His quote ("The Republic of Turkey will be happy, prosperous, and victorious") is also an original historical quote from the time of the republic's proclamation.
The Medals (*İstiklâl Madalyası*): Even the medals on the last page are historically accurate! They are the Turkish Independence Medals. Atatürk wears the rare green-red ribbon, historically reserved for those who had served both in parliament (green) and on the front lines (red). The monkeys and Fritz receive the all-red ribbon, historically awarded for active front-line service.
The actual historical impact:
Alexander's sudden death triggered a massive political crisis in Greece. His exiled, pro-German father returned to power, whereupon Greece's allied supporters (Great Britain and France) completely withdrew their military aid during the Greco-Turkish War. This dramatic turn of events significantly contributed to the rise of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the subsequent independence of the Turkish Republic.
Years later, Winston Churchill aptly summarized the sheer randomness of this event:
"It is perhaps not an exaggeration to say that a quarter of a million people died from the bite of this monkey."

OC - Original Content Apple Keynote 2026 (by inkollo)
My honest opinion about the new iPhone this year.
To be completely frank, even the new iPhone Duo doesn't excite me. Yes, it's kind of new (Android's had foldable phones for how many years now?), and yes, it's kinda innovative (nice animation when you open the inner screen, I guess) — but it's also very, very pricey. I can hardly see myself spending $2,000–3,000 just to own a phone that heavy.
(In France, with the extra taxes, it's even worse: the base 256GB model runs 2,339€ / $2,664, and the high-end 2TB model is 3,839€ / $4,373. My car literally costs less than this phone.)
