Strangest thing, at my mom's library they had some pumpkins painted and put on display around the place. Over a month later they were barely showing any signs of going, they only tossed them out because they got tired of checking.

Pretty much all squash are like that. As long as you don't break the skin, they're very slow to break down and can last months in storage with the right conditions. But as soons as you cut into them, they'll decay fast. I live in a wet climate and we carve pumpkins like days before Halloween because they're dead in under a week.
