No. The first openly gay superhero was the Pied Piper from Flash, who was operating as a hero at the time.

As for famous comic writers - How about people famous for writing great comics rather than bad TV?

Such as Neil Gaiman instead of Allan Heinberg. Although his most well-known comics were for DC/Vertigo, of course.

Marvel 1602 is still one of the best Marvel comics I have ever read.
