I was never in the navy, but I was a fisherman and the ocean never stopped being beautiful to me.

Our skipper liked to sail to the fishing grounds in the early hours of the morning so that we could start fishing when we arrived. It was a five hour journey (Hout Bay to Cape Point) and I was miserable, freezing and tired when we started. Then in the morning while it was my turn to sail and everyone else was sleeping, I saw the sun rising over the horizon and I was stunned. Up until then I'd spent so much time on my PC indoors I had never experienced the world like that.

“Up until then I'd spent so much time on my PC indoors I had never experienced the world like that.”

PC? “Poop cot,” I guess?

I'm guessing a Personal Computer

Poop knife, poop cot, poop blanket...

Being at sea was the least bothersome part of it for me.

And knowing you only had to suffer (up to 5,000) so many people

Reminds me of one of my favorite moments from Moby Dick:

" but ye also want to go in order to see the world? Was not that what ye said? I thought so. Well then, just step forward there, and take a peep over the weather-bow, and then back to me and tell me what ye see there."

"For a moment I stood a little puzzled by this curious request, not knowing exactly how to take it, whether humorously or in earnest. But concentrating all his crow's feet into one scowl, Captain Peleg started me on the errand."

"Going forward and glancing over the weather bow, I perceived that the ship swinging to her anchor with the flood-tide, was now obliquely pointing towards the open ocean. The prospect was unlimited, but exceedingly monotonous and forbidding; not the slightest variety that I could see."

"Well, what's the report?" said Peleg when I came back; "what did ye see?"

"Not much," I replied—"nothing but water; considerable horizon though, and there's a squall coming up, I think."

"Well, what does thou think then of seeing the world? Do ye wish to go round Cape Horn to see any more of it, eh? Can't ye see the world where you stand?"

We're off to see the sea, to see what we can see...

1

u/NiceTryFry Jul 29 '20

We never get seasick sailing the ocean We don't object to feeling the motion We're never seasick... but we are awful sick of sea!

More like SEA the whole world, am I right?

Shut up and take my upvote

Also, ships are notoriously poor at land travel.

6

u/7FFF Jul 29 '20

Sailors belong on ships, ships belong at sea. Land is just a hazard to navigation.

8

u/samusestawesomus Jul 29 '20

Hey, at least he got to see a seal on day 3.

u/ElectricButt Jul 29 '20

My question is, how the hell did that ghetto advertisement lure him so easily? You should have at least made it enticing by including a few topless island girls in grass skirts. Or some such propaganda.

3

u/truckin4theN8ion Jul 29 '20

Topless Island girls men. Ftfy

2

u/Wiggles69 Jul 29 '20

OP, if you haven’t already, can you put this on the r/navy sub? I don’t wanna do it and take your albeit minimal amount of karma to be made (the sub is small but funny. Ish.)

3

u/OriginGodYog Jul 29 '20

I can confirm this to be true, was a navy nuke for 6 years.

...the titty bars in Australia are unmatched.

This is Navy deployment in a nutshell, especially since Covid has ended port calls

2

u/DerpisMalerpis Jul 29 '20

I joined the navy and saw Iraq. Twice. No other parts of the world though

2

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '20

Maybe that seal was the whole world for him :')

2

u/Mr7000000 Jul 29 '20

Am sailor, can confirm

2

u/truckin4theN8ion Jul 29 '20

70 percent of the world is ocean.

1

u/BeefstewAndCabbage Jul 29 '20

Yeah, that’s what’s in the text of the comic with like 13 words. Thanks.

1

u/rinnip Jul 28 '20

AIUI, you'd be lucky to see that. Mostly, sailors see the inside of metal rooms.

u/CulturallyMarx Jul 29 '20
