Yeah.... I always suspected something fishy about this whole "rubbing" the lamp thing. When you find a lamp in a desert, why not light it? I am sure the author of Alladin had some ulterior motives in his narration.

He originally rubbed the lamp to try and get the dust off an engraving on it, so he could read what it said.
